Subject: Re-Visiting Lüneburg 21/5/2011, 13:14
I was stationed with the 8th Hussars in Wyvern Barracks, Lüneburg. The town is very different to-day, with much of the old, narrow town streets pedestrianised to great effect. I have been back a number of times in the past ten years, and although many of the old watering holes have gone the town is still worth a visit. I have always been made welcome, and many people ask me about what the town was like in the fifties. They even put an article in the local paper about me - fame at last! Anyone remembering Rauno's will be pleased to know it is still in existence, although it's a konditorei and cafe now.

Hi Craig although i wasn't stationed in Luneburg i did visit there on quite a few weekends from Munsterlager. Used to like going to all the bars down by the river. Had some good times and it would be nice to see some pictures of it now.

Another Cavalryman, that's two inside a week. That should "up the tone" a bit.
Welcome aboard !

Wecome to the gang! At one point in 1958 I was billeted with your regiment in Hohne as they were in the process of amalgamation with the 4th QOH. Were you there at that time?

What have I been saddled with ? I thought this was a stable site, I was unaware I had to curry favour or get the brush off. Sorry guys, I must stop horsing around, my fingers get rather numnah with a lot of typing.
Replying to recce83, I left Lüneburg before the amalgamation, being posted to the Northamptonshire Yeomanry for eighteen months or so before demob. NY had asked for a driving instructor. I was a gunnery instructor so it made perfect sense.

My great mate at boarding school in Germany was a SSM in the 8H
I was born and brought up near to Stoughton Airfield where the Regiment was based prior to going to Korea, coincidentally my father was part of the supporting REME Workshop there

I remember that airfield well. The only place I can recall where, on guard duty, it was possible to take one hour and fifty minutes to cycle round the perimeter. If there was moon it was quite pleasant! Not so clever if it was snowing. Long gone of course. I understand it's a housing estate these days.
craig-an-erin I had the pleasure?? of serving with the 8 KRIH LAD for short spell in Luneburg before the amalgamation, later seved with QOH but that is another storey and I dont want to upset General Brum. As you say the town had a lot going for it and I returned to visit a few times during my 20+ years in Germany and enjoyed it each time. Bob

I was stationed in luneburg in 1955 but try as will I can't locate where I was. I was a driver in the MT platoon with the East Lancs Regt. we arrived there in March from Dusseldorf until demob in Feb 56. I remember the pubs and a barbers in the main street now pedestranised. Our camp was in the town but where I just can't place. Any ideas welcome

Buck, apparently Alma Barracks was re -designated Theodor Korner Kaserne after the British left. If you type in Luneburg on the Google Earth search box then wheit locates it, type in Theodor Korner Kaserne it will then bring up the old Alma Barracks.
