| The only Garrisons now remaining are: Hohne (includes Celle/Fallingbostel) Gutersloh (includes Bielefeld/Herford/Munster/Dulmen) Paderborn (includes Sennelager/Hameln/Detmold) Rhine Garrison is diminishing as Rheindahlen draws down - JHQ is now almost a Ghost Town with only the 'Big House' still partially operating. | Final announcements regarding Drawdown of BFG is now scheduled for next year. Speculation is that one 'Super-Garrison' will remain. | |

| A story has started to circulate regarding deployment for Canadian Army units as soon as they're out of Kandahar (save for a training cadre situated in Kabul). Among various suggested places around the world, Germany is on the list for permanent deployment. Sounds like a good possibility and it would be nice to see them back in BAOR. It may help keep a garrison open. | |

http://www.bfgnet.de/Community/community.htm Quite sad. In total I spent about eleven years in Germany (1980 to 1983 then 1986 to 1992) In those days you were lucky to get to places like Hong Kong or Canada, these days it seems you would be lucky to get to Germany!

The only place I really liked was Hemer, beautiful region, the Sauerland.

| Mine and my wife's fave posting in Germany was Paderborn, a lovely town. I did four years there and my parents came out to see us every summer. When I moved up to Osnabruck they only came across to visit us once, they didn't like Osnabruck much, neither did we. My parents liked Paderborn so much they went there on holiday a couple of times after I left the army. Tbh I wouldn't mind doing the same...

Some postings were boring, others not so. Tbh I never had a boring posting in Germany, I didn't like Osnabruck much but it wasn't boring, I just didn't like the place.

| One weekend, in the depths of Winter, most of our Battery were allowed a bit of R&R back in Paderborn.
We were made to stay and guard our heavy vehs which were parked up in the camp of a Heavy Regt which was stationed in Fallingbostel.
I think that was probably the most bleak, dismal, God-awful camp I ever saw.
(And I've been to Clacton !).

| I enjoyed all my postings, the variety made each one different. The only place I was glad to get on an aircraft was leaving Kuwait, I had had enough of dealing with senior Kuwaities and making good their errors, then for them to try and blame me for them in the first place - still the tax free pay, loan service pay and LOA made up for it. | |

| During the 'emergency' my stepdad did his R&R in Malacca. He is still bitter about the fact that it was never recognised as a war. He was 1 KDG.
I would have said he was ex KDG, but he would not have approved, he was and is to this day 1st Kings Dragoon Guards, and why not.

| Top place for me in BAOR was Herford. My other posting was Munster but found it too big. You wouldn't have like Munster WILF as there were too many Scaleybacks there. Although I remember Famagusta in Cyprus (625 Ord Depot) and Tel el Kebir in Egypt (17 miles of perimeter wire) , those places were crawling with RAOC types. My favourite place of all time was Singapore, not the place of today with its skyscrapers, underground railway and Disney like Sentosa Island. Jimsigs1 | |
