- The Queen's birthday - which one ? She has two birthdays. The Official one is held around the end of May, beginning of June when the weather is normally better than in April (Her real birthday), and is marked by the Trooping of the Colour Parade. It is also the occasion when honours and awards are given out to some people of the Commonwealth. Australia and Canada do not now figure in these awards as they have their own. Good solid info which we were taught at school . Doubt it is so now.
Her Maj will be 86 on Saturday unfortunately I had to turn down an invitation to the party as I will be in Cyprus. Incidentally, my Grandfather died on his 106th birthday, we were giving him the bumps at the time.

As smart-arse 19-year-old signallers, we used to snigger in a superior way at WW2/Korea vintage officers who used to lace their VP with the old phonetic alphabet. Reminds me of when we were in Nienburg, around '61. My mate & I wanted to phone our girl friends in Denbigh. To do that you had to book a call in advance at RHQ. Having been given a time & date we had to wait outside an old telephone box for the operator to ring us and the call would proceed from there. (God, things have improved !). In the phone box, on the floor, was an old Wehrmacht field telephone (a bit like our Tele "L"). On the lid was the wartime German phonetic alphabet, D="DORA", etc. I wish I'd taken more notice now !

Making them serviceable, if the picture is a sample of what the Scaleys were using ! Tele "F" we had too. And we even had SM 10-line exchanges. (Don't start me on linelaying !).

Is this the exchange you are on about Brum
'fraid not mate. The SM10 had a line of sockets for jack plugs and a series of rocker switches, Up to speak, Down to listen, I think. To clear the line, you were required to say "Finished please, finished please ?" (It was quite possible, in those days, that there could be a General on the line). This must be anathema to the Scaleys among you but in the days when the RA was the biggest regiment in the British Army, the Gunners had a highly sophisticated and disciplined communicatiions setup. In deference to the Royal Signals, advances in technology required regiments like the RA to leave people more highly qualified to take over. Having grovelled sufficiently, we were shit hot when it came to Fire Orders. I know, because my OP party and I was shit hot ! I was involved in a Fire Mission Division once. I take the memory of it to my grave.
