| When stories started going around about the soviets drinking the anti-freeze from aircraft, etc we were of the opinion that any assault through BAOR would grind to a halt as the invading forces encountered the NAAFI shops in the garrison towns, not to mention NAAFI Krefeld. (Allways assuming they hadn't allready got bogged down in the German supermarkets, of course !).
The same thing happened in 1918 when the Germans broke through and came upon the British stores depots.

Did you get any infantry protection Brum, or was it up to the brave RA lads to defend their fireworks ? I can't imagine such a weapon not having FOXHOUND covering their arse cartav. Those missiles were stuffed with solid propellant, it would take "brave RA lads" indeed to hang around when the tracer started flying !

In my time, folk only used the rubbish the once. It was cheap and rubbish.

| Came across the WRAC skiing team some time ago at Rothiemurcus......... Women of the world & no mistake. My mob drew lots to even up numbers, threw out the rest, tapped sqn. funds for a contribution & organised a booze up with high expectations of an evening of lust & alcohol. No chance! After the unwanted returned from Aviemor they were busy until the small hours lifting incapable sappers into lonely beds in the ski lodge while the girls were finishing off the free booze & having a sing-song outside in their tents. | |

| [quote="pete26 That's probably why they had us running around in 'noddy suits' at every opportunity ?[/quote] As far as I can recall, the first Noddy suit I saw was when I was in recce tp, in '70. We were given these bits 'n pieces, all nicely sealed in plastic and told not to open them and keep them safe. Came the day the dreaded cry "Gas, gas, gas" went up we got into our S6s quickly enough but then up comes the QM (Maint), lamenting the fact that we weren't in our NBC suits and to please don them as soon a humanly possible. It was then we discovered that having removed the various bits from the plastic, we couldn't put them on because the layers were stuck together and had to be torn apart before our various limbs could be inserted. Brilliant ! Farcical ! 'kin stupid ! We were doooomed ! | |

We were doooomed ! Probably ! But so were those warriors in their armour plate & concrete blast pens especially in the early days of NBC. " Look....." someone on high said. " They'll all be dead in three days, though they might not know it....... Make sure they are usefully deployed whilst they are still able to contribute".

| Desperately trying to get back on thread . . . . .
When it was decided that the Soviet threat was not going to be nuclear anymore it was the army's task to get us aware of the dangers of biological and chemical warfare. (link to noddy suits ! See that ?).
We were told that we could be subjected to stuff that would give us the 'flu, stuff that would give us the screaming squitters - (good point, imagine trying to work in a closed-down tank in that state) and other such horrors that would make us lose interest in matters martial. They showed us a film (did anyone see it ?), that showed a bunch of Yanks who'd been given LSD then told to dig a trench, it was hilarious.
No need to bomb BAOR either, just send a few canteen wagons serving free booze around !

| I`ve seen a film of Brit squaddies in the same situation being told to unload a Stalwart. One of them grabbed the handle of one of the crates and started dragging it through the woods. I wonder how far he got before they stopped him?
The Russians had no need to send stuff over to give us the screaming squitters, we had the ACC for that.
Tin helmet on ready. | |
