Subject: German "pop" music! 21/7/2012, 18:37
There's a saying, “A picture can say more than a thousand words”, but also a snatch of music can bring back many memories. As I get older I find myself thinking back, more and more, to my period of army service in BAOR. In particular I often recall the German Popular Music that was always being played on the “Jukebox ” in the background when sitting in “Micky’s Bar” in Osnabruck, or “Cafe Schmidt” in (I think) Munster. One or two of the tunes title's I remember, but others are unknown to me, but still bring those days vividly to mind. Does anyone know whether there are any web sites that offer mp3 downloads of German “Pop” tunes of the late 50s?

I believe that Marlene Dietrich has a similar version - "99 Barrage Balloons".

Got a good book here........." Singkamerad----- Liederbuch der Deutschen Jungend" from 1934. That's more like the stuff they still sang under their breath in Osnabruck in the early 1950's. Not all "Horst Wessel" & the like, there's folky stuff like "Muss Ich denn", but not the Elvis version.
And if you believe the Wehrmacht had the best tunes, you can still download them from Google......... '''''

German Pop Music, or Deutche Slage. I seem to remember that German Pop from the 1960s had a difference to it, a distinct 'flavor' in its sound as against British Pop music of that period. I noticed this in the German Bars and Pubs I went to outside barracks. There was a distinct 'sound' to it. I still get nostalgic memories of this.... or it could be that I was pished and crying into my mug of Dunkel Bier as I remembered that the evening will soon end, and I make my drunken way back to Fransica Kaserne from the 'Shack' just up the road from the main gates, to stumble my way to the barack bloc and collapse into my pit!!
Do anybody else remember that 'sound flavor' of Deutche Slage.... ... or was it too a heavy night on the bier....?

I also liked the german pop 1956 till 1958 and still listen to ndr radio on line Sundays !0 am till 12, they still play many of the old songs. I liked Freddy Quinn and Heidi Bruhl from this period. Go on line to Ndr TV Select radio on the web page Then click on live stream to 90,3o digital Radio They play music for the over 60,s or if you know the singer look on you tube, search for the singers name lot of old songs can then be played.

Many thanks unclevanya and KIler Sprotten for info. It's nice to find that my "little grey cells" are not, apparently, decomposing, but my yearning to re-enter those heady days in BAOR in the late 50's and hear, once again. those rousing tunes is shared by others. One has to admit, that they were "happy" tunes, so unlike what appears to be the case with our current so-called Popular Music. I suppose with us being in the middle of the "Cold War" period then, we could have been excused for being served up with music with a less positive feeling, especially being in the middle of what would have been the front line, had "the balloon gone up" Once again, thanks for that, chaps.

I'm with you on the Oxen-wotsit soup, very popular at the autobahn restaurants. What I also miss is the autobahn coffee, no matter where you stopped the coffee always tasted great.

Nothing to do with German schutzenfestmusik this, KIeler but the "Three 'n Eights took over from "The Shiny Ten" in Paderborn around '63. (Conqueror and Centurion). Were you still with them then ?
