| Since my last posting on this subject I have now been able to source a supply of CD's of the 'Pop' music that emanated from the Juke Box in 'Mikki's Bar in Osnabruck, back in the 50's, and that provided a backdrop to our sessions there of an evening. Playing them never fails to bring back memories of those days, and of the friends I made, whilst in the forces, but have long lost contact with. If anyone is interested in obtaining said CD's, Polydor do an excellent series, in boxes of three CD's, entitled 'Deutsche Schlager'. I have found that www.obsessed-music.de has all the details on their web site | |

| I think with out a doubt that 'YouTube' has to be one of the best ways to watch music of that time. I can remember back in the early 60's going to see a group in a dance hall in Osnabrück. The group was The Spotnicks with Johnny Guitar, it was just mind blowing. The next day we went into the town and in Horton and bought the record. I don't know if some of you remember the EP records, they had 4 tracks, where the same size of a 45 but run at 33 rpm. I still have the record. For those of you that remember the Spotnicks you might like to listen The Spotnicks - Johnny guitarMike | |

| He moved from BFN in the early 60s to German Television (ZDF) and presented a programme called "Musik aus Studio B", it was a bit like a German Top of the Pops, he affected the pseudonym Heinrich Pumpernickel and the Germans loved him. He is still there now, in his eighties, and pops up on German TV from time to time. Incidentally, in line with another thread, he was a NS Gunner. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhyih0op9eg | |

Thanks for the link to Chris Howland who I remember well from his time on the BFN radio in the 50s and in later years on German TV
By pure chance I then found a secondary link from your original leading to Ernst Neger, the undoubted star of the TV Programme from the pre Lent Mainzer Fassernacht Karnival in the 60s/70s with his repertoire of comic nonsense songs. Bliss!

| It was with sorrow to hear of the death of Chris Howland at his home near Cologne yesterday. He came out to Germany in 1948 to join the then BFN as "Radio-caster".
Anybody who remembers Chris in German radio will remember his nickname "Mr. Pumpernickel". I will always remember Chris for his great German music TV programs like "Musik aus Studio B". He brought to Germany his great sense of British humour and correctness. In the early 70's Chris was asked to start-up a German radio transmitter on Majorca for the German/English guests on the island. Needless to say the radio station has gone from strength to strength. A great guy we will all miss.
RIP Chris, and thankyou for all that you have done for the British image abroad.

I didn't know that Big Mike, I can only agree with your comments. RIP Herr Pumpernickel.
