Just a few to wet the whistle.... now get the thinking caps on I would like to know which is the rarest .. the oldest and still in service cap badge and how many of the PALS regts were there ? Off the top of my head, (I just KNOW I'm gonna regret this !). Rarest ? How about Popski's Private Army ? Oldest ? If not the Royal Scots, could be the Life Guards. Pals ? Pass. Over.

| Mention of cap badges. I remember in the late 50s, National Savings did a poster on which was every badge in the British Army, (a lot of badges). One of these posters was on the wall in our Q stores and the BQMS was attempting to collect every badge on it. Some task, I often wonder if he ever made it. I wouldn't mind a copy of that poster, I wonder if they're available ?

| With the sweeping amalgamations of recent years and ignoring the Guards Division no Cavalry or Infantry Regiment can be older than the Royal Anglians (the Royal Scots were recently absorbed into the Royal Regiment of Scotland with their traditions being maintained in that Regiment's 1st Battalion (Royal Scots and Borderers) but their is only one capbadge worn by all five Regular Battalions.
Being pedantic many capbadges incorporate either the Royal Cipher or a Crown, these change with the death of the Sovereign therefore there were significant changes in 1952.
The current concept of headress/capbadge was introduced into the British Army in the 1870s I believe. It is therefore the Gunners/Sappers, Grenadier or Coldstream Guards who might claim to have the oldest capbadge still in use (ignoring the crown changes in the case of the Gunners/Sappers).
As to the rarest, how about the Jewish version of the Royal Army Chaplains' Department which incorporates a Star of David rather than Christian Cross as its centre piece?

| Can anyone remember the smallest Corps in the British Army before the Adjutant General Corps absorbed most of them? | |

| I'll have to mull over this "nut" clue. Up 'til now I'd have gone for SASC too, or perhaps the Fang Farriers. There weren't many MPSC either, as I recall, how about the Education chappies ? | |
