Are we supposed to celebrate 73rd anniversaries? It's not like it's the 75th or something notable.
I haven't heard of any planned events on this side of the pond, but then Canada declared war one week later that the UK. (Kind of interesting to think that for one week George VI of England was at war with Germany while George VI of Canada was not.) On the other hand I can't see anything happening over here a week from now. We are in the first year of a three-year government sponsored commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812. (Every member of the Armed Forces has to wear a commemorative pin on their uniform, made in China of course, for the three years of the commemoration.) This will be immediately followed by the four-year 100th anniversary of The Great War. The Second World War is on the back burner for now, I guess.
What would you have liked to have seen happen?
In the end I guess it's up to us, and those like us, to keep the memories alive, and celebrate those occasions accordingly. So, here's to the start of Britain's participation in the conflict that would come to be known as the Second World War. The great war against fascism that Britain fought, bled, and held, for two years without the assistance of any other major power. It's finest hour.
Cheers, Dan.

I would have thought, someone, somewhere might have mentioned it .. in my house, with two very close relatives 'killed in action', every day is Remembrance Day .. it must be my age and a different time period served in Occupied Germany ..

[quote= We are in the first year of a three-year government sponsored commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812. ..............
Dan.[/quote] I guess the 1812 confrontation is something which is given little prominence over here. This is a shame because that "Battle of New Orleans" skiffle thing and Hollywood's various concoctions relating to Yankee successes in the War of Independence wash over how, later, the Brits & Canucks gave the upstarts a bloody nose. They remember the White House being set on fire, but forget it was in retaliation for the same fate being perpetrated on the Canadian legislature earlier. Maybe Napoleon & Waterloo overshadow important events across the pond.
