| Anyone out there remember this? I think it must have been around March/April 1963. I was stationed at Gatow (No 1 S.D.) and had been at down at RAF Wegburg for a shoulder operation. The day after his ignominious arrival, I got a calibration flight back to Gatow and the Pilot (in an Anson) told me what had occurred the day before. Seems he'd flown up the corridor without notifying the Russians and they gave him a hard time in the air. He did one of those 'Opportunity Knocks' shows from an Army Base(probably Spandau) in the city then flew out from Tempelhof, his plane was dismantled and shipped out by road. Someone must have more info now, everything was hushed up then, how could that have been sensitive? Embarrassing, yes, anyone know more?. Also, I'd like to contact any other No 1 S.D. lads from the 1959-1963 era. Cheers, Joe Brown. | |

| This incident was apparently documented in Flying Review, June 1965. Using Google type: Aviation Forum - Hughie Green. Then go to article 45 on page 2 where the report has been copied.

Very interesting article, that. I'm pretty sure he didn't fly out of Gatow in that plane though as we(No 1 S.D) were a 24hr operational unit and any flying activity would have been seen and heard and certainly logged. To say he flew out in low cloud, early morning and probably low altitude, braving the corridor after what he experienced on the flight in might look good on his bravado c.v. but nobody could be that brave, or daft. I'm certain the plane was stripped and sent out by road. Again, if anyone has more or better info, please reply. | |
