| There's some sort of talk about opening a Cdn Base. Not like 4 CIBG was, but on a rotating base as it was in the early part of NATO. | |

I think I heard that a few years ago and I remember getting excited and posting it somewhere here. However I'm beginning to think that a "sort of talk" is all we're going to get. Still, I agree with those who see the so-called resurgence of Russian nationalism as a need for second thoughts. WE AIN'T DEAD YET!!!

One of our in-laws has a relative on tour in Latvia. I'll see if he's heard any rumours. After all, some of the army rumours were, and are, actually true. Our defence minister was in town (Kelowna) the other day visiting the British Columbia Dragoons and announcing summer employment for reservists. I should have gone out and asked him directly.

| Further to my above post, I finally heard back from the Minister of National Defence today. After a fairly lengthy dissertation regarding Canada's commitment to NATO and our intention to send an "expeditionary force" over the pond should anyone get too belligerent, he wrote that there was no intention to station more than the few people who are posted there already. (I didn't know we had anyone posted in Germany, but there it is. Probably logistical duties like movement control.) Sorry the news isn't as good as I hoped it would be. I guess we have to content ourselves with the battalions and support troops sent to Latvia on temporary postings. | |

| Well it appears that great promises are made, but hard to keep. My experience with Northern Defence of NATO Exercises, really made me just wonder what they were trying to accomplish. But then I never was overly impressed with Cdn. Guards. I was with them on both exercises. Denmark and Norway. | |

| https://www.forces.net/news/200-british-soldiers-remain-paderbornNormandy Barracks, Sennelager (Image: Stadt Paderborn). One hundred and eighty-five military personnel and 60 Ministry of Defence civilians will continue to live in Paderborn with their family members, the MoD has confirmed. The figure came after the Paderborn local government announced that 200 British Army soldiers would be staying. In addition, British troops will also continue to use Sennelager Training Area. The 45 square mile facility allows for large-scale manoeuvres to be rehearsed and there is also an urban warfare training centre. Welsh Guards used the site's combined arms tactical trainer (CATT a Lockheed Martin simulator product) to prepare to deploy to Afghanistan. Paderborn's local government said efforts to convert the Sennelager Training Area into a national park “would be put on hold”.
There are currently around 4,000 British military personnel living and working in Germany. A press release from the local government explained that 600 to 700 Britons will continue to live in Sennelager and operate at Normandy and Athlone Barracks - a number that would account for the families of around 200 personnel. The press release says: "About 600 to 700 Britons will continue to live in Sennelager."
