| At the RA ack ack trg establishment at Tonfanau, they had adopted a peculiarity in foot drill. Instead of coming to a halt miss- one- two, they stamped in hard on the "miss" beat. New squads heard it & liked it. After about a week they. too, got into the bang-bang -bang routine without any encouragement from drill pigs. They had joined the club and were new boys no longer......
All was well until the intake dispersed to service regiments. Now mixed up with new drivers & sigs from Rhyl, an attempt to halt the new intake as one displeased the management. Without the "miss" step, ack ack gunners stopped one pace before the rest. It was back to basics again until all could perform in unison.

| I can recall the time when I rebadged to another Scottish unit and the words of command to bring us to attention were different. We were used to the command 'Squad, Squad shun' Our new unit would use the the command ' Squad,Squad Attention. As you can imagine we were already at the attention when the command was given to come to attention. We could never master the new commands.Anyway our own regiment reformed and we returned to normality as they say. | |

| I still think of Poperinghe barracks in Arborfied, which in those days was still the old style spiders and of course wooden, one fag end and a spider went to the ground in less than an hour. The kitchen and cookhouse was also wooden and during the night the walls were alive with cockroaches.
Always made sure I was well back in the breakfast line so as to give the cockroaches time to escape from the cereals, thus keeping my appetite alive.

| Actually the cockroaches weren't only in the old buildings. We had them in our Barracks which were built in the early '50s and were similar to, for example, Maresfield Barracks in Herford.
Someone came up with a great solution of painting a three inch wide strip of lead primer along the edge of the floor by the wall. (These were the red concrete-like floors) The roaches didn't like it and stayed in the wall. It didn't get rid of them (they're prehistoric and out-survived the dinosauers, after all) but it kept them in their place and out of sight.

| You should see the size of the cockroaches here in China, you could put a saddle on the suckers and ride em LOL. They are supposed to be the only thing that could live through a nuclear war and I believe it. | |
