Just before you get to the barrier at the entrance, if you do an eyes left you can see a balcony. Adolph himself was said to have done a speech from up there. Not got any more information than that.

I know the balcony and house you are referring to but it is no more than an urban myth. Hitler NEVER visited Hammersmith Barracks. There is a famous picture (in my office) of some General taking the salute from the balcony but I can assure you it was not Hitler.
Hope this helps!

Hi all
Just thought I would drop a little note and let you know that Hitler did visit Hammersmith but never took the salute on the balcony.
Oh and if anyone wants any old and new photos let me know

Hammersmith back in my time was the home of 4Div Hq & Signals Regiment.
It was my first posting (1963), after I had completed boy service in the Junior Tradesmens Regiment Rhyl. Boy was it a shock to my system. I was 17 years old when I hit that place.
Not sure of the name but there was also a barracks facing which also had the cinema. Spent a few cold nights with a pick handle walking around the place.
I was Royal Signals but not sure I ever sent any signals after boy service. Just cleaned radio vehicles, fitted and removed radios. It was a place I was glad to see the back of.

Ah yes, the delights of stagging on, Wentworth 1 or 2............
Brings back chilly memories & that dam clock at Hammersmith, remember stagging on Hammersmith 1 watching the clock go back halfway through my stag for summertime.........felt like forever. Wherever you looked, you couldn't avoid that giant clock.....
Ahhhhhhhhh
Anyone remember the Toff Toff pub just as you entered Herford Town Centre? Good memories of that place, pulled the barmaid!

Remember Hammersmith & Wentworth Barracks when I was with 7 Sigs (Maresfield Barracks) 1963-66. My married Quarter was just around the corner from those two barracks at Birken Strasse. Used to pass Hammersmith on the way down to the NAAFI shop on the weekly shopping treck. Was in Herford from an earlier time - 1952-4 at Harewood Barracks. Just out of boys service in 1952.

Didn't the Germans build some great barracks. Remember my time in those type of barracks in 1952 at Harewood Barracks. Nearest thing in the UK were the Sandhurst Blocks at Catterick. Bit of an improvement over the old Cavalary Barracks in York.
PS Is the little market centre in the middle of Herford still there ? Also, is the NAAFI families shop still in the same place just off Mindenerstrasse ? Memories, Memories

Hi jimsigs. I visited the old place last year and was allowed an escort just to walk around (I guess I don't look much like a terrorist) Kind of odd to see woman in the guard room, not in my day. Big thanks to the guard commander. I wanted to look around to find old haunts but the roads seem very different now so I never found the old officers quarters or the NAFFI. Wentworth Barracks across the road (1 BR Corps) have a barrier now so I didn't intrude. I was a little short on time so didn't tarry. One strange feeling however. The roads from Holland are much better but the journey seemed longer even in a modern car. I used to do the same journey on side roads in a 1953 Beetle (BV 594B). It left me wondering about my memory. BH

Welcome
Your best bet is to apply to the Army Personnel Centre in Glasgow for a copy of your father's service record
There is a website which tells you how to apply.

I was in 4 ADSR LAD Hammersmith 79 - 82. Spent a great deal of time out in the Ooloo on exercise. Being Log HQ (3 Sqn. fitter) we had so many colonels and other bits of brass wandering around it just wasn't true!
