Elsewhere on this site we have the names and locations of a number of the Hannover Barracks.
These include Chatham, Edinburgh and London, Langenhagen and Stocken plus Standard House, the Garrison/District Headquarters
This is the first mention of Waterloo Square, any clues to the location?

| From what I saw on the film it was a square in the town not within a barracks. Could be wrong but I'm sure the commentator said town square, possibly why so many German civvies attended.

| Just Googled it in. Its a city square to commemorate the the victory over Nappy .. the Germans were on our side in that one.

| Could the vehicle and gun in the video have been a 17-pdr with its towing tractor? Similar to the one below? The towing vehicle is actually a Crusader Mk II Gun Tractor with its wading screens raised. I know the 27th Brigade infantry battalions were equipped with the 17-pdr as the battalion anti-tank gun. I have to admit I don't know how they were towed, but tracks seem the most likely vehicle type. Cheers, Dan.

Definitely not a 17 pdr either. Confirmed that cut down Crusaders with side screens for deep wading, were used as 17pdr. tractors from soon after D Day. Originally scheduled to be the bottom bit of 40mm LAA, SP. they were converted to 17 pdr. tractors when the Allies' air superiority made ack ack less of a requirement. With recuperator about half length of barrel, (ie much shorter in proportion to barrel length than 17 pdr ), gun shield returned on sides, 6 pdr. AT is favourite with Universal Carrier uo front.,

| 27CIB BAOR Attention JPW Location of WaterlooPlatz a.k.a. Waterloo Square, Hannover Further to Len's post, WaterlooPlatz is situated at the intersection of Gustave-Bratke Allee(K35) with Lavesalle (L384) . It is on the East side of this intersection and consists of 4 hectares of a large grassy rectangular field which is surrounded by large buildings. The Mitte District is to the North of the intersection. The North and South ends of the rectangle are semicircles. The most prominent feature on the site is the 46 meter high Victory Monument a.k.a. the Waterloo Column. As Len suggests, just Google around Waterlooplatz, Hannover until you find the best map showing the site. You will also find pictures relevant to the place. All the best, Bob | |

There's been so many photos posted and conversations taking place, I have to ask if we are all still talking about the same thing? I'm asking if the photo I posted of the Crusader gun tractor and 17-pdr is the same vehicle and gun combination ciphers saw in the NFB film on television. Has anyone else besides ciphers seen it yet? I'm still betting the weapon in the film is a 17-pdr being towed, if not by the Crusader, than by a T-16 or Windsor carrier. Both of these vehicles look like a large Universal-type carrier. Cheers, Dan. Windsor Carrier
