| Gents.
I was at Hobart Barracks in 1960/2. I was at 20 armd Brigade HQ.2nd driver/body-guard (Staff car) to Brigade Commander Brigadier J A D'Avigdor Goldsmid.4th/7th DG's. My Regt at the time were at Sennelager(Athlone Barracks).Just up the road really. Went all over The BAOR.Shape HQ etc With The Brigadier even down to the American Sector and Austria.I have quite a few photos. I will be seeing JPW in Jan-2016 perhaps he then can maybe explain to me on a one to one basis how to post up!. I also drove the Brig's Austin Champ & Ferret Scout car.Loads of photos of these. Plus went up a few times in his Helicopter and Auster L/PLane.Great fun. Al-though I was a trained Tankie at this time in the Regt and came though from J/Leaders RAC this was the best job I ever had. He was a real Gent.
May he RIP.
John. Oxford.

Photo 1 & 2 = This was taken by The Brigadier J. a d'avigdor Goldsmid.CB.OBE.MC. 4th/7th D.G's. It shows my self as a young L/cpl then driving his Champ on the Hohne Ranges. In the rear is his Caravan (Converted Bedford Q.L) Driver .Which I add was very nice. He was a RASC man and never got to see much firing etc so the Brigadier allowed him to join us.!.
Photo 3 = The Brigadiers Ferret. I also drove this as and when the champ was either in W/shop or it was a very wet/muddy day.
Photo 4 = Taken just after I got to Hobart Barracks (20 Armoured Brigade H.Q). I was assigned to drive General (Field -Marshall) Francis Festing.GCB.KBE.DSO who was then C.I.G.S. He was a real Gent and he had great respect for the cavalry as he kept telling me and mentioned my Regt many times. He himself an former Infanteer. I drove him all over the Sennelager area then up to Hohne again all around the ranges. All together I was with him and his team of course for about 3 weeks I remember on the the last day back at Hobart Barracks he came over to me and thanked me for being his driver.True Gent. Not long after that I got my first stripe. Thank you General.

| On behalf of John Walker Photo 1 = The Brigadier's Light-Aircraft. I did get a few cabbies in this also his Helicopter. When they were doing there test flights after maintenance.(Not the best time to get a free ride !).You will note the flying suit was at least two sizes to large for me.Emoji. Well I was only 5' 5" then. Slightly less now.Emoji.This photo was taken at the Airfield Hobart Barracks. Photo 2 = Taken at Hohne Ranges. Some of the H.Q staff on a day off. You see here the Brigadiers Champ plus a few others..In the back ground is the Staff car.Opel Kapitan. (that is me with the Guitar!!.) As I said a day off.Emoji EmojiPhoto 3 = Me driving the Bedford Ration Truck....The Brigadier was away for a week so I was asked (TOLD) to do this job as the regular driver was taken ill. I must say I lived well that week as did my best mates........Thank you SSM.Emoji. Photo 4 = The Brigadiers Ferret. Along side of me is a RTR man.Who was at that time 2nd driver for this Veh. Note a nice selection of Veh's in the back ground.

| 3 more from John Here are some photos from my Hobart Barracks time. Hope these will be accepted. I say this as they are on a completely different subject as you will see. I was doing my rounds as the young i/c guards for the vehicle park one evening and noticed up in the corner of one of the hangers a large tarpaulin covering something !! Like you do I investigate. Underneath I see this Motor-bike and side car. WOW. Now being a m/Cycle fan the following morning I make enquirers. I was told by the M.T dept it belonged to a RTR man who was at that very time in the local Guard room awaiting to return to the UK (Colchester ) for a prison sentence. I then go to his RHQ and speak to the chief-clerk .He tells me if I go to the Guard-room I may speak to him regarding this matter. So off to the guard room. I am given permission by the provost Sgt who arranges the meeting. The Soldier ...no names is delighted that I have made enquirers about the M/bike and said all the paper work is with his wife down in the Town.(Detmold). So he agrees to a sale and I offer him a fair price and he OK's this. He speaks to the Sgt and a telephone call is made to his wife who agrees to see me the next morning. Next day I call and see the good lady, she in turn shows me all the paper work. All in order so I give her the said amount in German D.M's. All singed up off I go.Again call in the guard room speak to the Provost Sgt to clear the release of the M/cycle and inform the RTR man all is in order and his wife has the monies. Next day I take the m/cycle over to the LAD workshop and start to really look at what I have purchased. With the help of the German foreman (who by the way looks after The Brigadier's Opel Kapitan staff car) My Boss. So here I am with my Zundapp 600 cc motor bike,we get her running .No problems at all.Now I did not want the side car which I add is a Steib and as the bike is in super condition. He the foreman says he can sell the side car for me.I agree and we take it off.I sold the side car to a garage in Detmold for a very good price.Gave The foreman a good %. I used the bike a great deal rode all over visiting my Germany friends which we had made while living in the BAOR from as you know 1946-1954. I did eventually bring back the M/bike to the UK (see customs form) re registered it and sold it on.Did VERY well. https://s717.photobucket.com/user/payne928/slideshow/John%20Walker%20-Hobart%20Bks | |

| On behalf of John Walker Here are. Our old house Number 15 Chamisso Str.Just a ten minute walk to Gordon Barracks. A red telephone box in the town center. My self out side Gordon Barracks. I was given a nice little tour around the Barracks and even went back in the evening to The WO's & Sgt's Mess and had a beer or two. I must admit I felt quite sad at one stage as the last time I was there was with my late Father in 1954. I was only drinking lemonade then !! https://s717.photobucket.com/user/payne928/slideshow/John%20Walker%20-Hobart%20Bks/John%20Walker%20Uploads | |

Once again I thank you for your kind help loading up the photos for me. However I know it was slightly off topic as we were talking about the Detmold area. But feel it is all much the same really. I will send a few more later today ref another visit I had in BAOR a few years back with a former Regimental friend. Thank you Len and regards to you and all others looking in.
