My father, Doug Joss was based at Scharf late 1940's as the OC of a Rest Centre. He claims he was his favourite posting. Whilst there he developed a stomach ailment that required in patient treatment at the military hospital at Rinteln. My brother and I are quite happy about this as he met our mother who was a nursing sister. She would come and visit when time allowed and the relationship developed, Lois would take the opportunity to go gliding. The station was mainly staffed by locals with a small military presence and on one occasion someone told him that some of the staff were stealing the left over food. He gathered all the civilians and told them he was aware of shortage of food in Germany and asked the staff to share the food equally. He is not sure if that was the reason but on leaving Sharf he was presented with the model photographed above. That photo was to prove useful many years later, despite being stationed at RAF(H) Wegberg 1978-81 and Lois and Doug visiting us we never took them there. My brother Andrew, his wife Sue and I visited in 2016 early on a Friday afternoon. We had difficulty finding anyone so wandered around, one gentleman came out and when we showed him the photo he got quite excited and spent the next 2 hours showing us around. We also visited the nearby gliding centre and a gentleman showed me several photos of the gliding school pre war. The next day we travelled to Rinteln and took several photos to remind him of his courting days (Lois had died a few years before). We shared these on his 95th birthday two days later. My brother Andrew also came away with another momento - a speeding ticket!!

Mike Joss in Canada has a number of items about RAF Scharfoldendorf to post. His father had served/been there and he received a number of contributions from a German (Harry Scharff) who had been at the Gliding School prior to WW2, and seemed to work there after the war

I was a child in Scharfoldendorf in 1963/64 aged 7+. I had a great time there My dad was in the workshops and he told me there were Germans working there too, under supervision. Apparently none of them fought against the British, all had been on the Eastern front!
The gates are familiar and I remember walking up to the NAAFI with my mum. Also swimming in the pool, which now seems to have been demolished.
I also remember there were two sledge runs on the hill above what's now called Fichtenstrasse, in Ithe, which was part of the married quarters. One was fast, going straight down, the other slower, winding down the hill.
Another memory is of the massive bonfire at the bottom of that hill on Fichtenatrasse. I was poking around it and found a used packet of Wilkinson Sword razor blades. I used one to whittle a stick, to make an arrow...., and sliced into my index finger. I ran home (just across the road at the end of Fichtenstrasse) where my mum was peeling potatoes. She called me a "silly boy" and pushed my hand into the muddy water in the sink (no scrubbed spuds - or motherly sympathy - in those days!).
I still have the scar on my finger but wouldn't trade it for anything.
So many stories. Is anyone still looking at this site?
