Subject: Identify this Royal Engineers Photo (1960) 8/9/2021, 11:21
This photo of Royal Engineers dated 1960 has ended up in the History Photo Album of the AAS Carlisle.
Although we at Carlisle did have a few RE's. This looks like everyone is a RE?
The photo belongs else where! But where? The visit of so many RE's could have been down to a Quadrangular Games even?
Can anyone recognise any of the guys, or the location? Is there a connection from maybe Chepstow AAS
Thanks Alan

I think it must be Chepstow. I was 60C B Coy at Arborfield and we all worn AAS badges. Although we lived in spiders just like the one in the background. When I first saw Chepstow it was all new buildings because it could be seen from the Severn Bridge when they opened it. I can promise that there isn't a single face there I recognise. Didn't the REs have a place at Chatham?

The photo is later, 60 B is a junior intake and No 2 Dress was not introduced until 1962, maybe JLR Dover?

Well spotted Alan! We were in 'button-up-to-the-neck' SDs until then.

This looks a lot like a pass-out photo for a party from 1 Trg Regt RE at |Cove, Farnborough, Hants, the fact that all the NCOs, including junior NCOs carry drill canes lends weight to this conclusion. I went through 9Trg Regt RE at Cove in Feb 1959 and 6 Trg Regt RE, that became 1 Trg Regt, was just up the road from us. 9Trg Regt RE was absorbed into 1 Trg Regt RE sometime in 1959(ish). Don't think Number 2 dress was issued to Sappers until sometime in 1962/3.
