Calling Sappers and Miners and those who remember
I have been able to research the Royal Engineers in Iserlohn from 1969 to 1994 but struggling for confirmation from 1947 to 1960 various parts of the internet and in a publication “The British Army in Germany (BAOR and after) an organizational history 1947-2004” has 23 Field Regiment RE as Dortmund know that to be 100% correct from 1950 they were in Napier Barracks until disbandment being well recorded on the internet by an RA website
The RE Museum records have the following for Iserlohn
May 47 to Jul 48 – 5 Field Squadron
May 47 to Jul 48 – 2 Field Squadron formed at Iserlohn
Jan 48 to Jul 48 – 38 Field Squadron
Jan 48 to Jul 48 – 21 Field Park Squadron formed at Iserlohn
Jul 48 to Jan 49 – 23 Field Regiment formed at Iserlohn – moved to Hameln later to Napier Barracks Dortmund
If correct believe they must have been in Mons Barracks as cannot find other units in there at this time
When 23 Field Regiment disbanded and squadrons went independent the RE Museum records show
May 58 to Mar 60 – 5 Field Squadron HQRE 4 Div supporting 5 Inf Bde – moved to Paderborn 5 Inf Bde until Jan 64
If correct believe they must have been Aldershot Barracks being a larger barracks able to take at least two regiments plus minor units as Mons Barracks being a single regiment size
Thanks to Paul for my link from the Iserlohn webpage to “British Army in Iserlohn 1947 to 1974” looking forward to updates and corrections
Best regards
Steve
