In1948 At the age of 15 I went with my family to live near 15 BOD, Glinde, near Reinbek. We lived in Eichenbusch near the camp. It was an RAOC Depot and we lived there for two years. I know it's a long time ago but is there anybody out there who was there at the same time as us? Especially any friends of mine. I haven't been able to find any sign on the net regarding 15 BOD. I went to school in Hohenzollern Ring School in Hamburg. David Grantham.

David Grantham. Only just noticed this web site and your questions. My stepfather was an SQMS in the RAOC and we were posted to 15 BOD Glinde in May 1948. I was only 5 years old but I do recall going to kindergarten in Glinde village where we lived, and later to school in Bergerdorf. My young friends were mainly German, apparently I spoke pretty good German by 1951 when we left! I remember birthday parties at the Colonel's house for his sons Peter and David Ormond or Ormand. Playing with my new friends on rusting multi barrel Flak guns near a disused spur rail line. Holidays at Scharbeutz on the Baltic and finally going to school in Altona for a few weeks before we were repat. Regards.

Hi!, Has anyone got any information and photos' of Uxbridge Barracks which was the HQ RASC Hamburg. The camp was in the district of Blankenese( I think I have spelt it right) and had a park to the front, I was stationed there 1956/8. Hope there is someone out there who can help. Keith Have a look at http://baor-locations.co.uk/318MT.aspx Mentions British Army Headquarters for Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein were there...so should have had HQ RASC there along with Hamburg District Signal Squadron have recorded Adams Barracks but would like further confirmation JPW and myself are working on the 21 Army Group/BAOR units May 45 to 1949 Regards Steve

I served at the Hamburg District HQ during 1950. It was located at Hochcamp which is on the S-Bahn line to Blankenese on the Elbe. It was a short walk through the park and across the Elbechaussee to the beach where there were bars and a small hotel.. The summer of 1950 was glorious. Families and boy-scout groups came to enjoy the beach and, in the evenings, they lit fires, barbecued and sang and played their music. I believe it was part of the healing process for Hamburg, which was still largely in ruins.

Gingadun
Welcome
You may have provided the definitive answer as to the precise location of Headquarters Hamburg District. I have looked at Google earth and there is no doubt your memories are correct. Was the complex called Adams Barracks?
Two other questions you might be able to help with 1 There was another large barracks complex in the area of Hochkamp S Bahn Station but south west of the station, your barracks was north east. Can you recall which units occupied this complex?
2. There was a smaller Barracks probably also occupied by the British in the centre of nearby Blankenese, can you recall any details?
Any info you can give will be most welcome to Steve and I who are the lead researchers on the topic of HQ Hamburg District on this site.

Good evening, Colonel. I'm afraid that was about the sum total of my information regarding local formations in the Hamburg area. We tended to deal with other units according to the Branch to which we belonged e.g. Medical Branch dealt with medical units, local medical procurements etc. There were very few (about 40) other ranks in the HQ and rather more officers, hence the order to dispense with headgear.

I don't kinow if this is of any help, but here goes... I was stationed at Uxbridge Barracks, Hochkamp, between Aug 1951 and Feb 1953, serving my time in the RASC. It was the former Clausewitz Barracks for the Wehrmacht, and is currently a training HQ for the present German Army. I worked in the District Quartering Office/District Barracking Office. The officer commanding was Major Walker, who was later succeeded by Captain Estlick. The chief clerk was SQMS Podesta. My roommate was Alan Sharp and I have a couple of photos taken around the swimming pool during the summer of 1952 that shows a few buddies.

Hi Gerry, I made a couple of visits to Hamburg 1951/1952 with 40 Field Sqn Royal Engineers on exercises from Osnabruck; we were billeted in a barracks; my memory not clear but opposite was a large complex was it a hospital a school or another barracks or something
Any ideas Regards Tony 22414720

Dear Sir or Madam,
we are producing a documentary for the NDR (public service broadcasting authorities in northern Germany) about the capitulation of Hamburg in the Second World War. For this purpose, we are looking for a british contemporary witness or a relative of him/her, who was in Hamburg, Germany, during the Second World War. Maybe you know somebody and could help me with a contact. Thank you very much in advance!

I was stationed in Nuemunster. Our schemes covered much of S Holstein and arond Hamburg. Went to a wedding last year to a village called Tankstedter Muelen. and stopped over night in the Hotel wit this name . Then it Came back to me Had also stayed there on maneuvers in 1956. C I can recommend this hotel had a wonderful stay ,about 8 miles north of Hamburg.

The visiting team had an option of visiting one of three cinemas operated by the Army - and a trip to the Hamburg Palladium for a variety show - on a Tuesday evening.
Who can remember being sent to any place in BAOR (Courses) and having to produce a Last Ration Certificate before they would feed ya! Anyone on here was at the match?

I arrived in Hamburg August 1950 to Uxbridge Barracks, as a telegraph mechanic in The Royal Signals. At that time it was HQ Hamburg District and it was also where HMS Albert was based (which moved to Cuxhaven within a year of my arrival). I found it was a very good posting, during which I enjoyed summer leave to Scharbeutz and winter leave to Bad Hartzburg in the Hartz mountains. I also took part in a shooting competition between the British and Danish armies at Putlos. I was in Hamburg until 1955.

Further to my previous post regarding my time at Uxbridge, here are some photos I have of the barracks. The black and white ones are obviously from when I was stationed there in the 50s, and the colour pictures are from when I was invited to visit the barracks again, by the officer in command, in 2012 with my two sons. I’m happy to report that the area has hardly changed and the barracks are now used as an officer training facility (now known as Führungsakademie der Bundeswehr).
