| Okay, I've had a bit of time to kill lately and after my National Service Memories post, decided to do a bit of digging on the German websites. I know this is not strictly BAOR history, but may be of some interest in any case. Here are a couple of images from postcards: The first is from around 1925 and shows members of 1st Bn, Inf Regt 78, 1 & 2 Coy. I can't think why it didn't have a 'Wish You Were Here' or 'Greetings From Osnabrück' message enfaced on it. Perhaps the printers couldn't afford it... or maybe they were waiting for a winter time snow-covered photo opportunity so that it could be doubled-up as a Christmas Card - 'Season's Greetings From Osnabrück'! The second is from around 1928 and shows a 'Families Block' (the main block in the centre?) and a 'Wirtschaftsgebäude' which I am assuming translates as office and/or estate building... I'm not sure (the smaller building to the right?). Imagine waking up on a summers morning, gleefully leaping out of bed, bounding over to the window and excitedly throwing the curtains apart to see what wonder and excitement the new dawn has brought... only to see nothing but concrete. ...and this link has some interesting photos of Scarborough Bks - and Normandy Bks (or parts thereof): http://www.historic.de/Militar/22.%20ID/InfanterieRegiment16/Photoalbum14IR16Osnabrueck/Photoalbum14IR16Osnabr%FCck.htmSome of these are just crying out to be used for caption contests! It's good to see that the Germans got to do all the same good stuff we had to... and still do. TTFN, Archie | |
