Hi all,

Can you help with a query. When British Forces France closed down in 1947 a friend of mine was posted on detachment from No. 1 Ind Coy Loyal Regt to the MT section at 54 Holding Unit at Bielefeld as a dispatch rider. He can't remember which of the many barracks in Bielefeld it was. Any ideas.

Cheers

I forgot to mention, he said there was a roller skating rink in the attic above the barracks if that is of any help.

It sounds very much as though 54 Holding Unit was what us "young pups" would have known as a Transit Camp.

There is a mention of it here:_

http://groups.msn.com/ERICFARRISOFBIDDENDEN/myarmyservice.msnw

I cannot find much else about it at the moment, we need one of our "Bielefeld Experts" on the job. Is it possible that it was Mossbank/Rochdale Barracks?

Paul.

Thanks Paul,

Yes it was we would call a transit camp now. I think the real title was RHU - Reinforcement Holding Unit.

When I was posted to the newly formed 106 Coy RASC Catterick Barracks in 1951 I was told that it had been a Transit Camp.
