Bruggen is now a civil Airport. I'll find out what is now called.....just for the record.

If you are talking about Elmpt it´s not a civil airport, it´s still military but the airfield is (officially) not in use.

But there is another airfield in the north, it´s called Weeze (Düsseldorf-Weeze although it´s not close to düsseldorf).

(sry for my bad english!)

Weeze airport was RAF Laarbruch, you can still see the Naafi as you enter the airport, Ryanair use it at present

RAF Bruggen is now called Elmpt Station/Javelin Barracks and is occupied by the Royal Corps of Signals. The airfield is officially closed.

Hello together!

For the airport topic I can have a say because I’m aviation supervisor at a German civilian airport.
I have prepared a picture which shows RAF Bruggen threshold 09 in Google Earth.

RAF Bruggen Thr_0912

1. Displaced Threshold / No landing
2. Threshold
3. Runway designator
4. Cross - Runway is not in use / closed

The cross should be attached directly on the Runway designator in accordance to Annex 14, Part I, Aerodromes Design Manual.
Perhaps there are divergent regulations for military airfields.

I also have seen obstacles on the Runway.
see pictures:

RAF Bruggen Obstac10

RAF Bruggen Obstac11

Runway is definitely not in use/closed.

Hope you don't think I'm nit picking, but 87 Squadron flew Javelin Mk1s whilst at Bruggen. They definitely disbanded in 1961 as 213 Squadron moved into their hangar.

Brian.

First of all, welcome to the Forum Brian, good to have you along with us.

Nit picking it definitely isn't. As has been stated before, we can only go with what we have at the time of writing and corrections are most definitely welcomed.

My source of information for the statement about 87 Sqn was two different parts of one site, so I used both in the hope that it would be clarified - and it has been, thank you.

I will add the correction to the page in due course, with credit to you. I take it you were in Bruggen around that time?

Paul.

Very good memories of RAF Bruggen Golf Course. Used to go there every Wednesday afternoon in the summer whilst based at Rheindahlen in 1986.

Ha ha. Yes of course that is just what the RAF would do.
While some of us poor sods had to do other silly things like 'guard duty, canteen cowboy in the naafi, local pick-up driver and so on. Well some one had to defend the realm. Sorry about that, it just made me laugh.
Laughing

Thankfully we had nothing to defend on wednesday afternoons so we played golf instead. Rotten job but somebody had to do it.
