Subject: British Army Maps of Germany 1945 20/2/2009, 14:37
Have purchased several maps produced by the War Office in 1945 Iserlohn along with Dortmund & Hamm as they border the Iserlohn map also Hameln there must have been a shortage of paper in those days as the the map was printed on the back of a 1940 German map of Maryborough Ireland! If appears that ownership of the map does not give you copyright that appears to still remain with the crown can anybody expand on this?

That is some list of maps, Steve!
What sort of price are they fetching? (probably out of my league anyway).
Paul.

From what I can gather, Crown Copyright can apply to a multitude of documents, etc - the ins and outs have passed over my scrambled noggin at about the stratosphere
One thing I did find was that the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 change a whole heap of things, including the length of time the Copyright is in force (of items already covered I take it) - 50 years from the date of said Act which makes it January 1st 2040

Hi Paul Thanks for that...have been down the road with another website that I put together and it seems if you publish Crown Copyright material you need a licence which I have...just unsure of the rules so as always seek advice

I noticed that you removed the sellers e-mail at his request. I would be very interested in buying some of these maps so can you tell us who the seller is and how to get in touch?

AMS 641 1:100,000 Library Maps: over printed with Nord de Guerre Grid (Datum point Paris) important for helping to tie-up GR found in War Diary (BR) / After Action Review (US) reports and the places they mean!
only the Lauenburg Map sheet (Elbe Crossing) is missing from this collection.
Here the 1:25,000 AMS M841 (GSGS4414) are listed alphabetically most, although printed at the end of WW2 (1945 -51), have the German Grid and so cannot be used to identify GR given in War Diaries or After Action reviews - albeit maps at this scale are often sufficiently detailed to identify larger sites (Barracks / airfields) and roads. All sheets are marked with Latitude and Longitude (along edges of map) so that places identified on the maps (with a little line drawing) can be compared with current GPS or Google / Bing Maps.
I haven't tried printing any out but each sheet is around 1.2 Mb

Map sheets revisited - these are in a library so suitable for reference and chasing movements reported in War Diaries and after action reviews (AAR)

The 1:100,000 is too small for location detail and yet to find online Nord de Guerre early 1:25,000 maps
TIP! Download the later 1:25,000 for the region then crop and print off the town/area required, using the 1:100,000 as a guide draw the grid lines in and label, as have found the on line Nord de Guerre converter http://www.echodelta.net/mbs/eng-translator.php not always correct

Paddy
Interesting reference with limitations.
Amazing how few of the 1935 onwards Hitler era barrack complexes are shown (the team have discussed the reasons privately)

Update: Found today that some of the 1:25,000 maps will show parts of the Nord de Guerre grid on the outer edge with a number and very short blue line...you will need to zoom in and have good eyesight to find it...confirming the echodelta converter can be circa 100 meters out!

a mixture of maps at 1:25,000 scale from German Resources pre 1939 base maps (includes sheets for former territories in Northern Europe) and Allied maps developed from airphotos from 1944 onwards many with Nord de Guerre grid that identifies locations mentioned in War Diaries.
Map sheets listed alphabetically but all expandable and printable. Sufficient data visible in right hand panel to identify peripheral sheets
