| My stepdad was with 1st KDG stationed at McLeod Barracks Neumunster in early/mid 1950's. From there they went to Malaya. Just thought I'd mention this since there were no comments about Neumunster | |

Good to have you drop by
We have more information on the units based in Neumunster in the period 1945-59 but sadly no photographs of the barrack gates
Will contact you privately, you might be able to help with the British presence in Moltke Kaserne Schleswig

| Hello, I was serving in Neumunster in the R.A.S.C. from late 1947 till we were sent to Gatow on the Berlin airlift mid 1948. Do you have any info on a speedway track I helped to build and race on, being on the outskirts of Neumunster. Phil | |

Sorry cant help on the exact details but a recent visit to the REME Archives in Arborfield confirmed that Speedway was indeed a very popular off duty pastime in BAOR in the immediate post war period. Another garrison where a speedway track was built was Hannover
In your time were any awkward questions asked about the use of Army property. fuel, spares etc?
Incidentally can you remember where the track was in Neumunster? Inside a Barracks? If so which one?
Heinz Johannsen would also delighted if you can remember where the RASC Bakeries were in Neumunster which he used to visit occasionally as a small boy

| Hi J.P.W. The team leader was in the R.E.M.E. I think he held the rank of captain, there was two or three other R.E.M.E.lads as well, and about six of us in the R.A.S.C. We had to go out of camp to reach the track, about a mile or two. I am not quite certain if it was McLeod barracks, its a bit to far back, but I know it had two entrance and exit gates diagonally opposite the main square and buildings, and as you came in the main gate, the guardhouse was on the left hand side, and the N.A.F.F.I. on the right I know the captain had a proper speedway bike with a J.A.P. engine, he used to win everything, we had old D.R. bikes, I can remember going to Hamburg a few times, to race against a team called the Hamburg Lions. It did come up about where the fuel came from, and we were allowed to draw a certain amount every month Phil | |

| Serving with the 15th/19th Kings' Royal Hussars, we were transferred from Adams Barracks - Rahlstedt Kaserne - Hamburg, to Neumunster in late 1951, and I remained with the Regiment until demob. in October, 1952. For the last few months I was in HQ Squadron, along with some very interesting characters (especially 'Chris' with his Triumph twin motorbike - and our excursions down to Hamburg!). I have quite a few photographs from that period - mostly 'on BAOR manoeuvres'. If there is anyone in contact from that period - it would possibly be interesting? Peter Davis | |

Welcome
I have a particular interest in anything to do with the British presence in Schleswig Holstein so your memories of your time in Neumunster would be an added bonus
Have you spotted the photo of A Squadron 15/18 Hussars in Rahlstedt? If not go to the Main Page of this site, click on Locations, click on Hamburg and then Adams Baracks

Welcome, there atleast 2/3 other contributors to this site who drop in from time to time who were with the 13th/18th in Neumunster
I have a particular interest in the British Army in Schleswig Holstein (I was at school in nearby Ploen) so anything you can add wil be most welcome (am classitied as IT incompetent but doubtless others will tell you the best way to post your photos)
