| Radio Luxembourg ? It was great but, guaranteed, the signal would fade out right in the middle of your favourite record.
My mate & I joined Jimmy Saville's "Teen 'n Twenty Disc Club", we were 18 !
As well as BFN and AFN, at one time we used to listen to CFN. Now THAT was a laid-back station.

| No Brit TV in 1952 when I was in Herford. Did watch the Coronation with a few other lads invited to the Officers Mess in 1953. Other than that our diet was Radio Lux & AFN.
Must mention other radio stations, we had our very own 'Crown Radio' out in Korea 1954, transmitting from an old Bedford QL wireless wagon staffed by RAEC.

| Used to watch Dutch TV at Bracht in the early 70's as they used to show a lot of British Programs with Sub-Titles rather than dub them like German TV did.
Was at Sennelarger in 77 when the test transmissions started, and you could get a tuner 'black box' to recieve it.

| Ahhh, yes CFN out of Werl....Canadian Forces Network...in our house we hardly ever listened to it, preferring the 'classier' BFBS which also had a wider selection of programming. CFN was all hockey and country music and Don Messer's Jubilee. A bit too 'down home' for us. Okay, yes, we were radio snobs!! LOL
We'd tune in to CFN for the news (much of it culled from CBC, the Canadian version of BBC aka 'Mother Corp') but that was pretty much it.
I don't recall Radio Luxembourg fading out but I suppose it did...but the mindset at the time was 'that was radio'...it did that sort of thing, it was part of the experience.
When we first arrived in Germany (this was circa 1959/60 and I was 5 going on 6 years of age), mom bought a really nice 'mantel radio'...beautiful piece of work actually. I do recall, having just arrived from Canada and even at 5 years old having adapted to watching television, such as it was, looking at every square inch of this radio to try and find where the picture was!
I'm sure we had a radio in the house back in Canada, probably in the kitchen, but I don't really remember having one (but I was 5!). This was a new experience but one I quickly adapted to.
3 years later we return to Canada (I am by then 8 going on 9) and we have a TV. Fast forward ten years and we are back in Germany and, again, no television really. But this time around we were prepared and adapted far more quickly to it. Plus I was now a teenager and far more interested in getting out of the house on my moped and bombing around the countryside or going to teen dances in Hemer, when we lived down there, or heading over to the Teen Hut and from there down to the gasthofs when we lived in Soest than I was hanging around watching television!
Now we have Internet....oh lord....total addiction!! :-)

| Yes Stephen how times have changed, I have an Internet Radio in Northern Cyprus and can listen to the BBC or just about any other Radio station that you care to mention and now with the advent of BBC iPlayer I can stream Live BBC Television to my Television as well. | |

| Shelldrake,
I listened to the Brit Army radio on my computer when I was on holiday this Summer from Kyrenia. Not very good reception on direct Radio though.

. + Jim, I invested in a "Pure Avanti" Internet radio which when sync'd with your PC can receive thousands of live Radio stations from all over the world, I was getting bored with the TRNCs only offering of Radio Bayrak. The only drawback is the 2 hour time difference between UK and N Cyprus, The World at One become The World at Three. Brian
