| Oh, I realize they were a different colour of blue, Len...UN = a pale blue, as I recall. It was what was done with them on those notorious visits into Limassol I was referring to....many a soldier had some explaining to do to the QM afterwards | |

| Yeah, that war of independence was messy, for sure.
When my parents and I were in Cyprus for Xmas in 1970 we stayed in Kyrenia on the north shore and made a few trips over the Troodos Mountains into Nicosia and did the tourist thing...well, we did the tourist thing all over the island apart from up along the panhandle.
We had a taxi driver in Nicosia who took us all over to places like the Bishop's Palace and the museum dedicated to the war.
As we were looking at the poster of the EOKA Most Wanted or whatever it was (Most Wanted back then...by the British...not by the time we were there) he pointed to one photo and said, "Recognize him?"
As we peered closer, then looked at the driver, we realized he was the young man in the photo, only 20+ years older now. It made me realize in a flash that today's revolutionary ends up tomorrow's underpaid taxi driver....

| Strange, when I was in Basic Training at Vimy lines, Catterick. The Geezer (ex officer) who was doing the selection for trade group training after completing Phase One, was suggesting that I apply to be a Lineman, followed by a Radio Relayman training. Never did happen, I was 'persuaded' to be a Comcen Operator, as there was a shortage of such creatures way back in 1963. As a consequence, I was sent out to 16 Sigs, Bradbury Barracks in BAOR for my B3 Trade Training in 1964, after failing to make it as a Spec Op at 224 Sig Squadron (Radio), Garrats Hey. As for why I chose 'Uncle Vanya' as my web handle, not really sure. I just chose this out of thin air. I haven't even read or seen any of of Anton Chekov's plays. if I had chosen a Web handle... to thyself be true... it probably should have been FUB (fat useless b'stid), but that is what a sergeant I knew many years ago was called when I was stationed at 223 Sig (Radio) Squadron at Winchester many years ago. Perhaps I should choose... 'Fat Pompous Corporal', because I was called this once on an RSM's drill parade. Real name is Bob Cl**k*, retired in Ceasaromagus, Essex after working for Essex Old Bill for a number of years in IT. Sod it... now I'll have all the Paparazzi around.... Hmm, I don't that I'm that important....

| My name is Geoff. I used to work in a place where there were THREE Geoff's. One Geoff was the boss, so he stayed as Geoff. One was Geoffrey Joseph, so he bacame JOE. As I was a "chippie" I was known as nails. That has stuck with me over the years. I'm sure that this is most interesting.....Not. | |

| My name is Andrew but from an early age I was known as Wilf! in fact our kid and I were known as big Wilf and little Wilf! Little Wilf's name is in fact Stephen.
During my army life I was known by everyone including the ex wife as Wilf, however these days I'm known by my given name largely due to the fact that the current wife hates 'Wilf' Says it's an old mans name! I have fond memories of 'Wilf', although it would be fair to say that was a different life.

................................................................................................. Not sure if I've mentioned this before, but after our first two weeks in khaki at Oswestry's 68 Trg Regt RA, we had the usual PSO's interview to slot us into further trade training, ensure that square pegs were shoved in round holes. One of our number was distressed, he looked forward to being a trained killer, but he was to be retained at Oswestry, potentially a Drill Pig.
It turned out that the CO was anxious to keep hold of any of the professional sportsmen that were conscripted. Gunner Bloggs, or whatever his name was, had been with GPO Telephones before call up . A lineman must have been a job allied to professional football, he'd stay on and help 68 Trg Regt win some silverware.

| Hello,
my name is Michael Wackers. From my user name you can easily guess that I am a Goons fan. I have been a British Army (plus Royal Marines & Empire armies) buff since around 1963 when I was 13 and just beginning to learn English. You can check out my albums on Facebook (under my name).
Kind regards, MB | |
