| Waldkaterallee has been wrongly translated. Kater is the German slang for a hangover. However a correct translation of Wald kater would be Woodland Cat or Wild Cat. It is just possible that the Germans were trying a play on words. The Allee (Avenue) was named after the Waldkater Bierhaus to which it led, a few hundred yards into the woods at the foot of the Klippenturm. | German location words frequently play on puns...and they say Germans have no sense of humour! LOL
I can't think of any examples off hand, but this one certainly qualifies.
To me it is clearly punning on "Woodland Cat" and the kater for hangover since the allee led to a gasthof. No doubt the cause of more than a few hangovers...to say nothing of the next mornings sensation of having probably swallowed a woodland cat whose fur is now stuck to one's tongue and the creature still clawing and spitting inside one's gut. :-) | |

| EVERSWINKEL- near Warendorf. I was told it meant PIGS CORNER,which may have been a reference to the inhabitants or to its location in the countryside |

| BMH Rinteln.....I recently visited the near-derelict site. Flags still fly over the "Reception" entrance. The main building houses some German psycho-geriatric patients (or similar). The area round the Officers' Mess is a dump for waste. Local residents assure me that the Waldkateralleee was there long before there was a "Waldkater" Bierstube. This has become a hotel "Complex" with its own micro-brewery. In my time, the hospital was surrounded by fields and had an orchard almost opposite (Pomona Apple-juice). The whole area is now built-over. Greetings! KPF | |
