Mercury Barracks Birgelen Empty
PostSubject: Mercury Barracks Birgelen   Mercury Barracks Birgelen Icon_minitime26/10/2007, 11:06

This was a purpose built barracks on the Dutch/German border.
It was considered one of the best barracks within the British Army, anywhere in the world.

Mercury Barracks Birgelen Empty
PostSubject: Re: Mercury Barracks Birgelen   Mercury Barracks Birgelen Icon_minitime12/3/2011, 14:13

Hi,
I have just discovered this site, I was stationed at Birgelen during the Cuba crisis when our national service was increased by six months, I worked as a telegraphist in the big house and was eventually demobbed in 1963.
My memory is not that good these days but occationally things like google earth trigger small memories, It would be nice to chat to someone who had served there at the same time, One of my old mates was Spider Webb, From Southampton we played squash occationally and once served together in the officers mess.
We crossed the border regullarly and made freinds with the dutch guy with the snack van which was always parked across from the pub,{again names fail me} We had to recross the border by 10.30 as I recall. Anyway hope this triggers someone,s memory it would be nice to chat about those times........cheers Brum Lee
