I too went to Bad Harzburg with my parents, at about the age of 4, which would make it 1948-1949ish. My only memories are of the cable car up to a monument, which Wikipedia tells me bears a plaque commemorating Goethe.

HI,
Have a view of this RAF video. Def RAF. But possibly not where you expected to be!
There are lots of photo filed away here. I'll try to bring them up for you.
Alan.

OK, maybe not the place you seek!. It is in the RED dotted town centre. This is where the RAF were. The photos, when I find them, are all from here.

Our paths may have crossed, even back then.
My Old Man stayed out there on Control Commission in Hamburg. Mum went to join him in '47 (I was 3) and for some reason The Atlantic Hotel in Bad Harzburg sticks in a half forgotten memory. I believe we went there every Christmas. Possibly other times as well, but I really don't recall those. Came back to UK in 1950 when I was 6.
I took my wife up there when she first came out to join me BAOR in '66 and I ran into the back of another car when I was busy pointing out the cable car. Dozy plonker!

Reply with quote I was first stationed in BAOR at Wolfenbüttel in 1947 with the Royals.Bad Harzburg was a favourite of ours, plenty of snow and winter sports in those days.We also used to get a few days "extra" leave for driving long distances accident free, and if I remember right you could have a holiday there for the princely sum of 6p a day.We had two hotels for the military, very well run and the food,in comparison to the then Army fodder, was first class.I was in the area last year,in winter,no snow, its all changed so much, tried to find those old holiday lodgings but without success.I also visited Goslar,Hahnenklee,Braunlage and the Brocken. We spent 5 days last New Year at Braunlage, had a great New Year, and wonder of wonders,we had plenty of snow!I currently live in Detmold. ----

'Wetmold' was my last posting '81 att to the QoH. Clearly they didn't like me and upped and left after 6 months! 4/7DG came in and I finished my time attached to them. 1984. By coincidence they went to Tidworth in the mid 90's and as a Freemason I used to visit their Lodge ('St Patricks' under the Irish Constitution with a travelling Warrant from around 1740!). They amalgamated with the 5th Skins to become the Royal Dragoons and are now in Warminster - so I still attend St Patricks Lodge regularly. However, this was about BOAR. We really did have it made out there, didn't we? Yes, there was pressure with duties and endless exercises, but very different pressures to civvie street! And although we worked hard, there was plenty of opportunities to play hard as well.
