Absolutely fascinating. Was the barracks area arond the Brackel crossroads or has my memory gone the way of all things?

Hi Locator, if you go south of the Brackel crossroads to the B1 there were 2 or 3 barracks to the left when driving direction Dortmund Centre on the right was Camp 7 (marked Barracks on the map) and the married quarters back in in 1980s Camp 7 was the Dortmund Garrison HQ and the Familes NAAFI...hope this helps

Conversion of grid references

JPW and myself are researching the locations of the "British Army of Occupation" post May 1945...but only have one 1:250000 map for the early 1 Corps District area so seeking the rest off the British Sector…have found a website with most maps of Germany produced in the late 1940s but these are 1:25000…can anybody help us out with how to convert from a 1:250000 GR to a 1:25000 GR…

Best regards

Guess you might have sorted this by now Steve, but if not and if I've not missed your requirements, Grid Refs are the same whether the map is
1:25000, 1:250000, or whatever, but remember that the eastings & northings figures are repeated every 100 km. and you may need to check out the small figure which precedes the main numbers to locate which 100 km group you are in. These small numbers are included on corner grid lines and at grids 000 of larger scale maps.

If it's the scales that you need to convert, the easy way is to remember that each grid square is 1 Km X 1Km on larger scale maps & 10 km or 100 km. squares on those of a smaller scale.

Thanks cartav
As yet not sorted...eg JPW gave me GR 121954 as the HQ of 31st Armoured Brigade in Jul 45 and this checks out as correct on my 1:250000 map but on the later 1:25000 map the GR is 241809 so struggling to find the conversion so we can convert GRs to 1:25000 maps...

I am having the similar problems following visits to the National Archives at Kew. I have a series of Grid References for the locations of 7 Armoured Division units in May 1945. Alan 8376 kindly recommended the echodelta. net site, unfortunately this positions the units in the middle of the North Sea not the coastal areas of Schleswig Holstein.

Sounds like there were different start points for the grids on each map....... the earlier ones with which I became familiar were original German issue overprinted with Brit info, later ones were more like our own OS sheets............. If they were both using the same starting points for the grids the last digits of each GR should be the same anyway. If you can locate a common feature on both maps ..... ie a road junction, a town centre, etc. you could compare the two GRs and calculate a conversion figure........... I think !!!!

If you get grid refs from the war diaries you can translate them in co-ords you can use on Googleearth/maps & a GPS on here. So give this system a whirl:-

http://www.echodelta.net/mbs/eng-translator.php

Useing this system:-

Soprano

Thank you-see my comments above

I am using the echodelta method but the results are sometimes inconsistent (it can be a lottery selecting the two letter prefix)

Thanks cartav, soprano54 and JPW

Have been working on it today and also found a German website to plot the co-ords
http://www.deine-berge.de/umrechner_koordinaten.php

Also this shows the later GR system quote "1000 metre Universal Transverse Mercator Grid Zone 32U International Spheriod" for these late 40s early 50s maps...cannot remember doing this on my ACE I map reading...

Steve

Glad you have found another option but it looks as if it is based on a metric grid system, the 1945 British maps were based on an Imperial (yards and miles) system.

Have made some progress with 7 Armoured Division units in Schleswig Holstein but currently have 3RHA somewhere in the North Sea or Baltic depending on the two letter prefix not north west of Hamburg, south of the Kiel Canal, and similarly for the 11th Hussars who should be in the Brundesbuttel area.

May PM you the two grids if all else fails.
