How about Banter ? "The Old Buggers Banter Squad " ?
It has a ring to it, I feel.
The buggers bit sounds a bit dodgy I must say Now that's just sour grapes ! To qualify for the OBBS you need to be over 60, under that age you kids have no conception of true banter. We Old Buggers are so good at it that I feel the only possible challenge will come from Oz, closely followed by Canada. You younger blokes ? No discipline, too much testosterone, there'd be punch-ups every two minutes. Take our star performers, blokes like Teabag, they're not volatile. (Pause for horse laffs !), you would'nt expect aggressive behaviour from men from Merseyside, would you ? Don't feel sad John Boy, with a bit of seniority, your turn will come.

Okay Mr Lock, history lesson. Apologies for getting Canuck wrong first. You knew what I meant though!
Think it was about 1865 or so. Some geezers in Septic land i.e. the United States of America got a bit fed up of their Government and decided they were going to form their own country.
This became known as the American Civil War. (Roll on the British one is all I can say). I digress as usual.
During said war, Cammel Laird ship builders of Birkenhead, builders of fine ships for many a year including two of the Ark Royals but of course that was later, built ships for the Confederate states also known as the Rebels. The most notable one being the Alabama which went on to become very successful in sinking Yankee ships and I also think did a bit of bombarding on the side. These ships were built in secret as our great country was not supposed to take sides. Well slavers, businessmen and general gobshites that the merchants of Merseyside were, a blind eye was turned.
After the war which you may be surprised to know that the Rebels lost, the North i.e. The goodies decided that Britain had been very naughty in allowing these ships to be supplied that they demanded millions of pounds in compensation. Failure to pay would mean that Canada would be invaded and taken over by them. We paid. Not sure what the figure was but the same today would break Britain, more so than she is broke today.
The Alabama was sunk off France later in the war but was one of the most successful ships of that particular conflict. Thank you, Teabag....but what has THAT to do with Canada??? You write of the American Civil War (or the War of Northern Aggression as many in the Ol' South still call it....). That was such an American way of doing things. Here in Canada, if a province (oh...I dunno....Quebec, let's just say!!!) decided 'sod it....we're outa here!' and opted to form their own country, all this would require is a vote of 50% plus one....Quebec has been threatening to do that for decades. Good lord, we even had a Separatist (they prefer the term 'Sovereignist') political party sitting in the House of Commons as part of (insert uproarious laughter here) Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition!!!!! We Canadians have perfected the art of irony!!! But I digress..... I was not aware who built ships for the Confederates....obviously someone had to since individual American states (which, despite their declarations to the contrary, they still were) didn't have their own little navies, or any battle ships, that being the balliwick of the Federal government....but I never really thought about it, either. Interesting some British shipbuilder got in on that deal.... Why on earth would I be "surprised to know the Rebels lost".....I hope I am not detecting a hint of patronization there! Now, here's where I get a bit confused (or you have): "the North i.e. The goodies decided that Britain had been very naughty in allowing these ships to be supplied that they demanded millions of pounds in compensation. Failure to pay would mean that Canada would be invaded and taken over by them." Oh wait....you're saying the United States threatened to invade Canada if Britain didn't cough up the compensation!!!! Ahhhhhhhh....well, seeing as how we KICKED THEIR ASS during the War of 1812, I'm not sure how well-advised that would have been....okay, okay....in 1812 we were not yet "Canadian" but "British colonials"...ditto in 1865-ish, seeing as how Confederation -- the creation of the Dominion of Canada -- was finalized in 1867 so I suppose it could be argued it was the BRITISH Army that kicked American ass in 1812 not "Canadian"....a small historical point LOL

| Also stemming from the Civil War was the Alabama affair. This involved several Confederate warships including the Alabama that were illegally built and outfitted at British ports. There was some fear in Canada just after the Civil War ended that the U.S. would take out its frustrations on Britain by invading Canada. But the U.S. was in no mood to fight another war that would likely have been about as bloody as the one it had just fought. The Alabama issue was finally settled in 1872, when an international arbitration board awarded the U.S. $15.5 million damages. Canada had hoped to receive reparations from the U.S. for the Fenian attacks, but it was not to be. It evens out in the end, anyway. I still think we Americans deserve reparations for Celine Dion.
I dragged this off Google.

| Immigration is a very interesting topic. I have worked in the business for many years. Like many of you I too am an immigrant, I landed up in NZ 30 odd years ago intending to only stay for 6 weeks. Thank goodness for a shortage of mechanics and an open immigration policy. The nostalgic backwards looking reminiscence about what England used it to be, is just that, reminiscence. All countries, England, NZ or Canada are an ever changing and evolving dynamic organism. The England you remember so fondly would be unrecognisable to a person from only 100 years before that. They would no doubt be saddened by its total immorality and liberalism. Women voting !!! the uneducated having a say !!! no longer hanging little boys for stealing bread, what is the world coming to. Like it or not things will change, it’s a law of nature, nothing remains the same. For you it’s a downside for others a vast gain. I don’t think it has much to do with policies on immigration. The changes we see now are so much faster than we have seen in the past and are more due to things like transport, availability of disposable income and relaxed borders than to do with politics. I too find it difficult sometimes, but people are allowed to live in UK (or NZ) and still continue in their traditional beliefs. I have no more objection to burkas than I have to seeing a nun in a habit. Though interestingly I lived in Indonesia for 4 years and can count on the fingers of one hand the number of full burkas I saw. I have no problems with people building mosques, and I have attended many. I know its disturbing, but your not going to stop it.

| I got this in an E-mail - Quote :
- In Seville Spain , local people found a way to stop the construction of another
mosque in their town. They buried a pig on the site, and made sure this would be known by the local press.
Islamic rules forbid the erecting of a Mosque on "pig soiled ground." The Muslims had to cancel the project. This land was sold to them by government officials.
No protests were needed by the local people...and it worked!
How much truth is in it,i don`t know.. |
