| Twas a warm summers eve and out side the guardroom the Provo SGT was pacing up and down waiting 19.00hrs to arrive and the first of the nights show parade to march down.19.00hrs on the dot they duly arrive all dressed in their No2s and all squared away or so they thought.I will now back up a bit I happened to be on the phone to my now ex wife this was back in 1981 when I observed this ritual take place.I will now carry on...well thy all paraded out side in 3s and the Provo Sgt began his inspection well all was going well untill on young lad started to laugh at a comment the Sgt had said so quick as a flash he jailed the whole squad now nothing unusual there until the next squad turns up and within minutes they to were in the cells (guard room had a 4man cell and 2x2man cell )...well this is fun I thought when the next squad turns up well good 'ole Sgt didn't even wait for them to come to a halt but just opened the door to the guardroom and marched then in , Well this happened a total of 6 times (I think)and to say that the guard room was full Sardines had more room in a tin . I have often wondered if nearly 200 young lads in one guardroom is a record If you have any guardroom capers lets hear them | |

I think it was OCs morning parade and basically he must have thought that half the parade were crap and put them on show parade and the provo Sgt must have been in a vv bad mood that night to see it was hilarious

Should have filled in the provo sergeant. What an overbearing prick. Bet he thought he was the bees knees and went home and bragged to his missus while she bulled his boots. Nothing but a bully who couldn't do a proper job! If it was one thing I couldn't stand about the forces it was the way anyone could be slung in nick on the whim of someone like him. No I never entered it in my life but the injustice of it always got to me.

| Must've been a bloody big guardroom !
Nearest I can come to that was in the early 60s.
We were in Nienburg. We'd lost our guns and were waiting to change to nuclear.
A fourth battery was required to be equipped with 8in How. The battery (34 Seringapatam), came from a regiment that had been disbanded and they were not happy, around thirty of them finished up in close arrest.
They used to be marched to meals in three ranks.

| I was once on a course where it was the norm for at least a dozen of us to be on show parade each night. On this particular 10pm show parade we lined up outside the guardroom and awaited the arrival of the Orderly Officer. As he came to me I stood to attention and gave my name rank and heinous crime which was having a nasal hair showing while on parade! he bawled 'show nasal hair removed' I opened my left hand to show the offending hair. He said nothing and moved on to the next bloke who immediately came to attention as I stood at ease. He gave his name rank and crime which was not showing enough aggression (on the assault course) the orderly officer bawled 'well, show aggresion' he had a boxing glove on his right hand and immediately punched the bloke on his left who went down like a sack of spuds! The Orderly Officer bawled 'good man' then proceeded to give the bloke who had just been punched a right bollocking for lying down on show parade without permission!
It's the stupid things like that I miss...

| But then there was the Pay Officer ( The pay school back in the 60's was in Vimy Barracks Kingston Ont) who showed up for the inspection pissed to gills and had no idea what he was there for. All he could mutter was, " do you have a bar of soap in that small pack?". Kept asking the NCO i/c who had no gear. Kind of sad now that I look back on it. | |

| [quote="Shelldrake I remember a BCs inspection with 24 in Paderborn, the BC said to Swiney Tennent (NCOIC the Piggery). "You're not very smart, are you Tennent?", to which Swiney (from Scotland) replied, "You're no say ****ing smert yersel!". Laugh, I nearly passed the fags round. [/quote] It looks like there was a Regimental custom that survived the end of NS then ! When 24 Medium was in Nienburg we had a Jock who worked on the regt pigfarm too. He was called "Piggy" Beaton. Nobody wanted to have him living with them, so he had a four-man room to himself ! | |
