Hi all, I’m touring Germany/Belgium & Switzerland next month and would like to call into Witten Annen where I used to live as a child late 50’s. Can’t remember the street details of the army houses but do have vague recollections of the area which no doubt by now has changed greatly. Father was in the REME located in one of the workshops as per this thread

https://bfg-locations.editboard.com/t1407-sgt-cyril-rayner-reme-dortmund?highlight=cyril+rayner

If anyone knows if the area/houses etc. still exist would appreciate any info at all, thank you.

A couple of thoughts which might be of help

In the early years of this site one of our contributors lovingly and laboriously produced a Google Earth overlay of all the BAOR barrack locations known to him (I have a copy).

This included 5 Inf Workshop in Witten Annan.

As discussed elsewhere on this site the British Army quit Witten Annan in the late 50s and the Workshop moved to the Dortmund Area before moving on again to Munster. The site was then handed over to the German authorities and must have been demolished at some later date. The Google overlay shows the barracks to have been inwhat is now an industrial estate just to the south of the 44 Autobahn and route L662 (Dortmunder Strasse ) to the north of the town of W-A.

Looking elsewhere there was another brief discussion about some photos taken in the Barracks. Two contributors were a Mikey from North Yorkshire who first logged in 2009-02-25 and briandcross who registered on 2011-02-21. They were clearly stationed with the Workshop in the mid 50s If you can identify them from the memberslist they might respond to a personal PM.

Can'nt help with MQ area but do recall that some members of 23 Base Workshop in nearby Wetter lived in Witten Annan in the early 60s. Stephen Locke, one of our Canadian contributor's father worked in the Base Workshop for a time though he did not live in W-A. Again if you approach him privately he just might be able to help.

Good luck with your quest.

Many many thanks for your reply jpw, as I recall I do have some memory of father moving work/workshop etc to Dortmund and seem to remember him taking me the the same on a number of visits, all highly above board at he time I bet Wink will check out your suggestions and once again many thanks.
