| We get the C.D. We called it the RCAF medal. Before computers, it seemed only the RCAF put in for it. Around 73 when it went computer there were tons of them being passed out. Best medal parade I was ever on. We sat in the lecture room of 4 CMBG HQ's had a quiet talk by the CO of the Sigs Sqn and then had our medal passed onto us in a civilized manner. No drill, no fuss. I well remember seeing them in their cases in a huge stack in the SSM's office. | |

| Unless you had dreams of ever getting to RSM I think it was pre-requisite you had to have the conduct medal. I remember being told that on a disciplinary that now I would not qualify. Oh well lol. Medal parade in Cyprus was a proper parade with the UN commandant presenting medals onto number 2's but after Desert Storm we just formed up on the strip at Brize Norton in our combats, sgt major had a bag full of boxes of medals and got the troop sgt to dish them out, quick attention and thanks lads and that's your lot lol. | |

| The person responsible for selecting the RSM is the Commanding Officer of the unit.He normally would select someone who he knows personally from experience by serving with him through the years,Some RSM's are promoted but don't actually become RSM of the battalion/regiment they most probably are posted to another unit and come back to their own units etc with a short term commission or a we used to call them QM's commissions. They can only attain the rank of Lt-Col then they can retire into a job for the boys somewhere. | |

| BAOR(27CIB) Attention: Hardration re: CD Canadian Forces Decoration for 12 years of service I never heard of it being debased as the RCAF medal. One learns something every day. I remember applying for it. It came in the postal mail in a nice case with my name and rank inscribed on the edge of the medal. There was no drill, on fuss, no muss, not even a presentation. Must have been during Hellyer's regime. LOL Ritter

What's this ? You took your No2 dress for a UNFICYP tour ? That's unheard of !
We had our medal parade in Ziyyi camp, waaaay before your time. General Unpronounceable of the Finnish army turned up, hung a medal on Jock Wiseman, (from Coventry), and the rest of us picked ours up in the *oggy shop at NAAFI break some days later. 'twas a very smart parade, I recall. (I lie, they were Hussars). | |

| Speaking of an infantryman of course Gordon.Corps are inclined to be larger than the average infantry and also artillery which is a corps also. When I joined up the Parachute Regiment was a corps as it stated in my release book,"Parachute Corps".I always wondered why those who come up through the ranks were never allowed to command a battalion or regiment. But I know of a person who had come up through the ranks and went on to command 22 SAS.When RSM's get a commission they walk into jobs like MTO,Families Officer,Quartermaster etc but never allowed to do those officer jobs like Coy Commanders,2 I/C's,and Commanding officers. No doubt it is a class thing. Can't have commoners sitting with Lord and Lady muck now can we. | |

| Sorry to be pedantic rucjock but the Gunners are a Regiment - The Royal Regiment of Artillery. I have friends who have been commissioned from WO 1, a few have commanded a Battery, albeit Headquarters Battery and most, if not all, have held a Battery Captains appointment prior to being selected for a Quartermasters Commission. | |

| I remember seeing the Royal Artillery mentioned as a Corp regiment.I'm not sure where I saw it.It was some time ago back in the sixties when recruitment was at its height and nearly every unit had small booklets advertising their wares at KAPE Tours around the country. | |

Interesting steve..I know many apprentices and JLs made commisioned rank, and a few made Lt/Col,but would be interested to know who commanded a regiment, and what route he took to that position.. I know of one Ex apprentice who made Maj/ Gen..His dad was an RSM . The other ex A/T who rose on high was myself, who has the FM baton to tote around |

| Back in 2010 at a reunion we presented a replica LS&GC bought on eBay for a tenner to a former Denbury Boy who joined up Dec 60 and to honour his 50 years working for the Queen without a break he made A/Lt Col but retired as a Major and still working full time for the military...one of the many who did not get a real LS&GC awarded... | |

| At the fifteen year point I marched in to the CSM's office and asked how I go about getting 'my' LS&GC. I cant remember his words exactly, I do remember he wasn't very polite and his words of wisdom were conveyed at about 100 decibels, largely due to the fact that I was taking the piss and the CSM knew it. Our brief chat lasted about twenty seconds. OK I went in nick a couple of times when I was a lad but in all honesty I thougt it a tad harsh to hold it against me. Whatever, still loved it, and I'd still join again. | |
