| What were folks memories of the best posting, or the worst posting they ever had during their military careers. My best posting was with HQ AFNORTH, Kolsas just outside Oslo, Norway. A great posting with little or no actual military duties such a guard duty, PT, runs, drill. I must say that after three years in this posting 'peeing' it up, and generally living the life or Reilly, enjoying the Norweigian hospitality etc; by the time I was posted back to 11 Sigs, Catterick Garrison, I had nearly forgotton how to do drill, and march a squad around in a smart and soldierly manner, and all those other soldier like actions. Norway was the best posting that I ever had. I drank too much, smoked too much, ate too much, lay about too much - hence I podged out too much as well, and am still feeling the affects today. (My GP has put me on a diet and I have to loose 8 stones. Boo Hoo!!). Well, that was then. As to the worst posting I ever had. Well that was a toss up between 28 (BR) Sigs, Franscica Barracks, and the 6 month tour of Norn Iron in 1977. I really did not like the claustrophobic feelings of constantly being 'under Arms' and having to be on the alert. No doubt these feeling of permanent alert etc was what our Dads, uncles etc had to live through on a much more intense sense during WW2. Other postings ranged between indifference to average. I msut say I did like the three years I was stationed at 223 Sig Squadron (Radio) at Winchester, Hants. That was a better posting. So what were the best or the worst that other folks experienced. And, do our lads and Lasses in the Military today have as much fun as us old crusties did way back when, all those years ago?

| Well must say I thoroughly enjoyed all postings, I suppose the best time was when I first joined 43 Mov Con at Dusseldorf, in 67 we had two flight days a week, they were BAC111 and took about 64 passengers so a short week, still plenty of duties of course but they were ok also the unit at the airport was very small, something like 20 or 25 personnel and all top heavy, most getting on very well with each other and plenty of time to relax in the evenings in our own club in the cellar of the ATC

| My first posting SINGAPORE/BORNEO,Based at NEE SOON/SELARANG BKS not bad.I was undergoing parachute training at RAF ABINGDON sheer luxury for a whole month great food and table cloths on the table with salt/pepper pots,butter/jam/marmalade on the table considering MAIDA BKS which was a dump of a place but there again it was the PARA REGT and AIRBORNE FORCES training centre in ALDERSHOT so no luxuries there. The next arsehole of a place was FORT GEORGE near INVERNESS. Always wind swept and raining. The accommodation also was rather poor as was the cookhouse. You had to stand outside in the cauld everytime you wanted a meal. INVERNESS was about twelve or so miles away and the bus service was limited in that if you missed the last bus from INVERNESS you had to either get a taxi (expensive) or hitch lift from a passing motorist heading for Elgin or some motorists who were in the RAF stationed in either Lossiemouth/Kinloss some of whom I might add were great in that they went out their way to actually run you to the Fort itself as it was a good bit off the beaten track. And the other alternative was to walk.BERLIN was a great posting but the stupid duties you had to perform was rather boring as were the ROCKING HORSES similar to (QUICKTRAIN) in the zone on a regular basis.Meeting Berliners and talking about their experiences during the war was great and the hospitality from them was very much appreciated indeed.BAHRAIN HAMALA CAMP was the pits also, nothing there but sand, sand and more sand. | |

| Best and worst for me is easy...
Worst posting Bicester, best posting Paderborn.
Bicester was soul destroying, we worked in huge warehouses with civies and had civy managers! This was my first posting and I thought what the fek is this? I couldn't believe what I had got myself into which is why I attempted to transfer (Denied) which is why I got into lots of trouble. Bicester was a shit hole. I found it difficult to undrstand why anyone would want to be posted there. Eventually they kicked me out and sent me to Soltau, which came as a blessed relief for everyone.
5 Ord Bn Paderborn was a great four years, I liked it, the wife & kids liked it and even my parents liked it, they came out for a week every summer. Happy days.

| Best posting would be CFS Alert. Yes the most northerly permanently inhabited spot in the world, but I was the Baker for my full tour. Other good one was 1 SSM Bty RCA in Germany for 4 years. The worst would have been 2 SSM (Trg) Bty RCA in Shilo. This unit had all the rejects from the 4 Regts. of Cdn Horse Artillery as instructors, etc. They were of the lowest standard I ever witnessed. Funny the difference between the two Bty's. Mind, we had a few slip into 1 SSM Bty but that was near the end of the SSM Bty's existence.[img][/img] | |

| Best Posting: 30 Fld Amb Sennelager - really good bunch of guys and because you were outside of Normandy Barracks, had its own all ranks club that held some of the most memorable do's ever.
Worst Posting: SEME Bordon - never could get used to the fact that the Regimental Duty Staff (Those in charge of SEME Regiment) could not get it through their heads that those on the permanent staff had seen and done more than they could ever hope to achieve.
Most exhilarating Posting: Royal Hussars Fallingbostel - was there when it was announced that they were to be the first Regiment in Germany to receive Challenger MBT - never seen the moral of a whole unit go through the roof as much as theirs did. | |

| West Berlin (as was) and Sennelager. Wasn't keen on Minden but that was more of a unit thing than anything else. Bielefeld was OK. Would have been better had the SSO not been such a clown but you can't have it all your own way I suppose. If I was pressed between the first two, I reckon that I would go for Sennelager. I had two really good tours there. | |
