| my best posting in germany was the old raoc depot in viersen , an old coffee factory taken over during the war , the office block was used as the mens billets and admin offices , fully centrally heated , and double glazed even in those days , we had to climb a marble spiral staircase to the cookhouse and naafi, two or three men to a room , we had a nice posh pub and restaurant virtually oposite the main door , a wonderfull pub halfway down the hill into town , ten minute walk and we were in thr centre of town , mind you in those days viersen was a little town, i hear today viersen is now a city with a big population , the best thing about the old factoryas it fronted onto a bust road , at night instead of booking out at the guardroom most of the lads would open the billet window and shin down one of the lamposts outside the window , ginger | |

| Hi all,
BAOR was the best posting because of the barracks, Roberts in Osnabruck was a great place Central heating and double glazing, nobody had that in UK in 1951 If you liked kippers, Saturday tea was always kippers and cheese on toast Of course you had to be in a unit with good mates and officers UK postings living in spiders or those old places in Aldershot, not the best; and in Germany you could not get home at weekends, and all those train trips in UK trying to get back to camp in time on a Sunday Most of us had a good time, and never regret the experience A great pity none of my old unit [40 Field Sqn, Royal Engineers] are on this site Cheers Tony

| So, with limited scope for posting abroad and within the UK after current round of cuts, and the closing down of BAOR in Germany; she UKs military have closer ties with the EU (aka EU-SSR Land)? The EU plans to create its own Army, Navy and Air Force using the military of its member states. Should the UK military be more integrated with command possibly being handed over to Brussels bureaucrats?
I know many of the EU member states are also members of NATO, however NATO is usually dominated by the US Military, and politically. Should we give over command to others?
There was one German General, cannot remember who stated that if "He had British Tommys, French SNCos and German Officers" he could beat any army in the world.

Don't know about that one but Alexandra the Great said he would rather fight a 100 lions led by sheep than a 100 sheep led by lions. This was updated for WW1 to 'Lions led by Donkeys' as to how the British tommies were viewed by some observers.

| The version I heard was:
Canadian Soldiers British Discipline German Tactics American Equipment.
Had to edit that, I knew there was something German mentioned in it. Been donkey years since I thought of that one.

PS Did you like my deliberate mistake 'britzkreig' (blizkreig) a play on how swift the Brits responded via carpet bombing.
