| This is one for the Old Sweats. Who remembers being appointed Senior Soldier ? (This usually occurred when the NCO in charge of a party of men wanted to sneak off for a smoke or a drink in the mess). The theory was that the senior man was placed in charge of the others while the NCO was away and was then authorised to order them around. Yeah, right ! In the Stroppy Sixties ? No chance ! | |

| Didn`t the guards have them?..
At brat school we had senior A/Ts. who wore a half stripe for a week when we were in recruit company. |

| When my son was at the Guards Depot they had Senior Soldiers and had to be addressed as such! In Boys Service we had Recruit Leaders who were a term ahead of us and wore one upside down stripe, they were normally promoted to J/Lcpl at the end of term. | |

| The RAF had the "senior man" in 1952. Imagine a very cold November day on the square at RAF Cranwell. Corporal Ayres, in his Boysie (Fools & Horses) accent. -"Senior man ,senior man, march this flight up and down while I go for a wee" Can't remember how the senior man was chosen, but it was never me. Happy days, whats this got to do with BAOR? | |

Do you mean that Corporal Ayres was in Nienburg:evil: He was also the guy who said "When I was in the Guards I got 97% for drill, and that was out of a hundred" What he was doing in Guards I dont know.

I had War Certificates Parts 1 and 2 from the Parachute Regt Army Cadets, was also an instructor on rifle, bren, map reading, field craft and theory of small arms fire. | Senior Soldier - so who knows who was the longest serving Soldier of Private rank in the Brish army in the post war years, who did their 22 years or more, with lots of good conduct stripes and bars to their LSGC medal, and who never wanted any promotion, even to Lance Jack...?

As I remember, some smelled rank...... Sgt/Mjr soap and a corn broom with cold water seemed to cure it.
