starting some research

G.day from australia, I am trying to do some research in relation to my grandfather who was in the Royal Engineers, I have sent off for his service record from the MOD, but that can take a long time from what i understand, i have a photo he took which ha has written the following on Hameln B.A.O.R 1 nov 1946 22 feb 1947 road to mines and demolition site 1 E.T.E, I just wondering if anyone might no something about it ?/

You will discover your grandfather would have been part of 7th Armoured Division RE, as the division was disbanded in Dec 47 then became 1 Engineer Training Establishment stationed at Holzminden, in Mar 49 7th Armoured Division was reformed and 1 ETE formed 21st Field Engineer Regiment moving to Gordon Barracks Hameln Oct 49, then on to Assaye Barracks Neinburg Nov 51

I am sure my neighbour served with this unit, along with other duties at Hannover, which included recovering dead tanks littering the countryside from WW2.

He was also at Hameln, when many war criminals were brought there, to the prison, to be hanged for their war crimes by Albert Pierrepoint.

Sadly my friend died about a year ago.

It may be possible to identify other locations your grandfather may have served in prior to the Hameln move from his Record of Service.

Matthew, do you have any photos of persons your grandad might from the unit 1ETE?
