| Surely "double tap" was also a couple of rounds rather than a burst of fire on the old beloved 303 BREN gun? | |

| did anyone ever remember having to use Brasso on the studs of your ammo boots when on a major parade for VIP's? One thing i remember from thsoe far off day was an obsession of being 'elevated' to the Officers Mess!! I did get into the Officers Mess - detailed off as Mess Orderly of sorts when a lowly Signalman to clean the Junior Officers bedrooms, polish their brown shoes and polish their Sam Browne belts. What a load of untidy, lazy junior officers there were at 28 (BR) Sigs, St Tonis back in the 1960s. Waht a bunch of tw*ts, having to make their beds, clean their bunks, and poish their damned shoes etc. Even press their uniforms...twats....twats.... twats.... There was an elderly German female employed to clean the Officers ablutions. Some of the lazy buggers were even too lazy to flush away their 'floaters'. The German cleaning lady was constantly complaining to the Mess Manager, a Sergeant about this. So us orderlies had to flush and clean the 'Hofficers Bogs!! This only lasted a few weeks as my OC Troop considered it a wasteful used of trained Scalies (Comcen operator/data Telegraphist). After this, I was promoted to local Lance Jack, then a few months later, acting. then I was posted to a 6 month tour with the UN at UNFICYP HQ Nicosia International Airport. An excellent 6 months to gain practical experience in my job...!!! | |

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not only for top brass parades, but SOP in basic trg, for everybody, I bet. Then our drill sgt, who really was human eventually, let on that often that we NS lads brought it on ourselves to some extent. For a joke, maybe, someone at the bottom end thought it would be a good wheeze to polish his studs, scrape the paint off the tin of Kiwi or shine up the drawing pin in the notice board. Such activity passed up the line, something to brag about over a pint in the Sgts' Mess, and so, not to be outdone by competitors for the best squad , some of these idiotic tasks became common requirements throughout the unit. You see, sometimes it was the bright eyed squaddy who thought them up, not the management ! | |
