Paul

Welcome

We need to alert our currently absentee distinguished Gunners Brum and Shelldrake to your query, they may be to comment on the employment of Regimental Surveyors within the Royal Artillery.

My immediate reaction is that 218/55 stands for 218 Battery of 55 Regiment but from my working notes I cannot identify a unit combination of that description

Unfortunately too I cannot magnify the detail on your detail on your AVTAR. Will contact you privately regarding a possible way ahead.

Finally where did your grandfather live before joining the TA, this might provide a further clue to the unit?

Paul

Have hit the jack pot.

Your Great Grandfather was undoubtedly a member of 218 Battery of 55 (Loyal Suffolk Hussars) Anti Tank Regiment RA who were under command Headquarters Artillery 49 (West Riding) Infantry Division.

i will pm you privately on how to access a superb Dutch site which gives an almost daily account of the Regiments time in Holland from November 1944 through to late May 1945 when the Regiment took up Occupation Duties in Germany (almost certainly somewhere in the industrial Ruhr).

Webmaster Steve is our resident expert on 49 Division and will doubtless add more when he returns home next week.

Paul

To update the public data (you already know the detail through our exchange of emails)

SY stands for Suffolk Yeomanry not Survey as I first thought.

55th (Suffolk and Norfolk Yeomanry) Anti-Tank Regiment RA

Hi Paul and welcome

To add to JPW post, from our joint research of the British Army in Germany post 8 May 45, not sure how far forward your research is but here goes:

The regiment was part of HQRA 49th (West Riding) Infantry Division – The Polar Bears – moved from 1st Canadian Corps Holland arriving Ahlenberg south of Dortmund 6 Jun 45 forming 49th Artillery Brigade

55th (Suffolk and Norfolk Yeomanry) Anti-Tank Regiment RA – Kurl north-east of Dortmund 6 Jun 45 – to Camp 7 later Suffolk later Ubique Barracks Dortmund – to 53rd Artillery Brigade of 53rd (Welsh) Infantry Division 15 Jul 46
217 Battery – 218 Battery – 219 Battery – 220 Battery

1 Feb 47 – to HQRA 2nd Infantry Division when 53rd (Welsh) Infantry Division was disbanded

1 Apr 47 – renamed 53rd Anti-Tank Regiment RA – Suffolk later Ubique Barracks Dortmund moving to UK Sep 48
106 Battery – 110 Battery – 115 Battery – 205 Battery

Hope this helps
