Welcome and thank you for your kind offer
I am sure I am not the only one who would welcome any photograph you have which will help identify exactly where the Regiment was in Luneberg and Goslar in 1945.

| I'm not very good with IT but I'll give it a go. I have about 300 photo's of the regiment from 1945 -47 most of them are in Goslar, Bad heartzburg? and Wolfenbuttel. Perhaps someone could put me right with the names. The above 6 photo's are all from the Goslar billets between August and September 1945. I will post a few more later today.

Thank you for postings these photos.
Plenty of homework for "the team" to get their teeth into and it confirms our earlier thoughts that the Regiment was split into number of locations during their time in Goslar and not based at the old Luftwaffe airfield camp to the north of the town.

| The photo's have been stored in my uncles attic for over 60 years and the scanner that I'm using is not very good. The photo's are in pristine condition and hopefully I would like someone to scan them properly so they can be preserved forever. I have over 300 photo's all of the Life Guards in Germany, Palestine, Egypt and Cyprus from 1945- 47. I also have some German/ Nazi propaganda photo's/ cards that looks as though they were cellotaped on the walls of the billets in Goslar and it looks like (probably ) my uncle or his mates tore them down and saved them. | |

Many thanks for taking the time to post all these great photos. They are going to interest a lot of people. Your efforts are much appreciated.
Note that the regiment was known as 1 Household Cavalry Regiment (1 HCR) during WW2 and consisted of personnel from both the Royal Horse Guards (RHG) and the Life Guards (LG). On 17 July 1945, the two regiments 'unmixed', with all RHG personnel moving to 2 HCR at Bruhl, and all LG personnel moving to 1 HCR at its various locations. Not until 26 September 1945 did the War Office approve the official redesignation of the regiment to the Life Guards.
You may be interested in these dates taken from the 1 HCR/LG War Diary:
20 May 1945: HQ and D Sqn moved to Goslar (other sqns were based in other towns) 18 Jun 1945: D Sqn replaced by A Sqn 19 Jul 1945: HQ, B & D Sqns at Goslar 26 Sep 1945: Entire regiment of Life Guards concentrated at Top Barracks, Wolfenbuttel
I look forward to seeing the other photos!

Thank you very much for your latest postings, much appreciated
Peter One small point I think the individual with his arm in a sling is a Corporal of Horse (Sergeant equivalent) not an Officer, the two Household Cavalry Regiments did and still have their own unique rank structure/titles, Dave will doubtless correct me if I am wrong.

| Peter, Great photos, especially a 'Day with the Horses'.
Ref the photos from further a field. This site was created really to encompass in the main, Germany, with slight deviations to other 'Theatres of Service' to fit in, without breaking the thread topic being discussed.
In this case, my own opinion would be to continue and add photos here, as this gives a potted history of how things progressed post 1945, for the Regiments being discussed in this particular thread.
Peter, I suggest waiting for a site Admin to give their opinion!
Thanks again Alan

| Fantastic photographs of contemporary history. They are of particular interest to my son who was the Farrier Quartermaster Corporal with the Life Guards (Not in 1945 I hasten to add!!). | |

| I agree with Alan, why not post them to the Non BAOR Section and let us all enjoy them. Many of us served in those and other postings not covered by sites as well run as this one. | |

These photographs are indeed a fantastic contribution to this site and bring back happy memories of bygone way of life now gone for ever.
Look forward to seeing the non BAOR photographs, many BAOR units were based in those garrisons as indeed were a number of contributors to this site. Can I suggest you publish them in three separate batches entitle possibly Life Guards Palestine, Life Guards Egypt and Life Guards Cyprus?
