| Stationed at Hereford 7 Signal Reg from 1964-68 went on detachment to Checkpoint Alpha 6 times in 4yrs. CO was RMP Major Rose .

| In 1957 we passed through Helmstedt en route to Berlin for some big exercise. I recall the mixed feelings of excitement and trepidation when we stopped at the barrier for some time before being allowed to proceed. Happily we were eventually sent on our way, and ended up in the Grunewald. The name of the exercise escapes me. | |

| The ammo dump compound near Herford was manned by 7 Signal Reg who provided the guard duty. Remember being driven by landrover at 3am to start a 3 hour stag. Locked in the compound with a pickaxe handle inside was a small sentry box with a windup phoneThis was 1964-68. | |
