| Hello everyone, I was reading about the Montgomery barracks in Berlin on this page: baorlocations.royal-signals.org.uk/home-3/locations/berlin/montgomery-barracks/ And when I got down to the second image my eyes were drawn to this man: The image text says: "The presentation of the 1st Bn East Yorkshire Regiment in 1952 to the Ernst Reuter, the first governing mayor of Berlin" Does anyone here know who this is? (the man the arrow is pointing to) Or how would I go about finding out? I'm asking since he looks a lot like one of my relatives when he was young. It's probably just a coincidence but I got real curious when I saw this picture. Brgds //Andreas | |

| "The presentation of the 1st Bn East Yorkshire Regiment in 1952 to the Ernst Reuter the first governing Mayor of Berlin". The Photo in question is from an earlier post by Andreas who was seeking further comments regarding the soldier. After mailing the York Museum who hold Journals from the above named Regiment. The reply I received back indicates that the photo is not the Mayor of Berlin. It is infact, the Mayor of Beverley, Yorkshire and his Deputy. Note. It is my interpretation that the Mayors 'Chain of Office', is not typical for Germany! Nor is the wearing of bowler hat traditional. I think the original title of the photo by the attributor is mistaken! (Originally posted on the BFG/BAOR site). Of course this does not mean the German Mayor never inspected the Regiment. | |

| Alan Well done an excellent piece of research, remember “history is a mystery and only as good as those who wrote it down” | |

| Here is Pt 2 of the York Museum's reply. This is by by Anthony Eden during July 1952 on a visit to the East Yorks Regiment in Berlin. Compliments of the YORK ARMY MUSEUM. The newspaper cuttings are from the journalsof the The East Yorkshire Regiment 'Snapper' PS. 10 Shillings for the correct answer on the source of name 'The SNAPPER' as used in the journal name. Be careful, when using Google. There are some rather rude modern day interpretations. I want the original meaning! | |
