My dad was in the Green Howards and ended up in Schöningen, Germany, after the war ended doing amongst other things guard duty on the border (a river/stream) between the Allies held bit and the Russian held bit near Hötensleben I believe.
Cannot remember the actual dates or years.
He talked about being on some guard of honour when the Brit "top brass man" turned up at I think Celle.
I believe there were barracks at Celle but not sure about Schöningen.
I have a few photos which I believe were taken in Schöningen but there are no names or dates on any of them.
Bit of a long shot as I guess most veterans of that time may have slipped away like my dad has

Hötensleben | Helmstedt Autobahn Checkpoint ALPHA
Grenzdenkmal Hötensleben, Saxony-Anhalt (Russian Zone) vs Helmstedt Lower Saxony (Brit Zone) The Border Memorial Hötensleben is one of only a handful places on the former inner German border where a large section of former border installations can still be seen in situ. The border wall, watchtowers, fences and other installations form an outdoor trail, marked with signs that explain each aspect of the border system.
Schöningen is a town of about 11,000 inhabitants in the district of Helmstedt, in Lower Saxony, Germany

Steve. Sorry about the very late reply to your interesting and informative post. I need to check which brigade my dad was in. I have the info somewhere but my "filing system" got scrambled by me sadly
Once again thank you for your response
