Subject: Regiments of the BAOR in Lingen Germany 25/2/2021, 10:18
Helly guys. I´m living in germany and recently making some family research.
My grandfather was a british soldier who was positioned in Lingen (North west germany) shortly after the war (1947), but I did not know him as his Name was allways a secret of my Grandmother. So I´m searching on my own. First of all it would be helpfull to know which british regiments has been in Lingen in that time.
If anyone has some Info it would be great

Welcome TheNic
The 3rd Infantry Division were responsible for Landkreis Lingen on VE Day 8 May 45 to 28 May 45 then 305th Anti-Aircraft Infantry Brigade to 2 Jun 45 then 1st Polish Armoured Division to 15 May 47 when relieved by 7th Armoured Division.
However British Troops were in Lingen after the barracks had been cleared of Prisoners of War and Displaced Persons as follows:
1 Jul 46 – 1st Battalion Royal Leicestershire Regiment Essex Barracks formerly Walter Fritz Kaserne 11 Nov 47 – United Kingdom
21 Jul 46 – 8th King’s Royal Irish Hussars Royal Armoured Corps Dover or Balaclava Barracks formerly Scharnhorst Kaserne 13 Feb 48 – United Kingdom
Records show the barracks were side by side so may have them the wrong way round

Nik, Sorry this 1928 Photo from Lingen won't help you with your research! I thought it was of interest.
Maybe there are family of yours in the photo?
Regards Alan
