Hi,
I have happened upon this website while helping my mother track down her family line. We have a real lack of information on a Major Alec Pettifor (O.B.E) and I was wondering if any of you would know where to get any more information on the gentleman? Or even better, If any of you have any first or second hand information!
For reference that O.B.E. recommendation letter has the following:
Unit: 15 Advanced Base Ordnance Depot Parent Corps: Royal Army Ordnance Corps Rank: Major Personal/Army number: 249986 Initiating officer: Colonel Commandant R. J. MEECH, 15 A.B.O.D. Date: 2 July 1953
Finally, while there is a gentleman in the family with this exact name, this may not be him! That's why I'm looking to find more information, so as to confirm or reject it.

Great, thanks! Sorry for my ignorance, but I'm surprised that I can't find a place to find record using his "Personal/Army number". Is this data protection type stuff stopping me from looking at people who have been alive too recently?

The UK Birth Marriage and Death record for the first quarter 1965 spells his forename as Alic instead of Alec, which may have fogged yr researcher
