I was a ski instructor at BFPO 27 Silberhutte in the Hartz mountains must have been around 1967 ish? I taught downhill and cross country really enjoyed it. Will be passing the area next week in my motorhome and will drop in to say hello to the adventure training commandant to bring back a few memories.

Best check it out on Google earth - neither Silberhütte nor Torfhaus exist for the Brit Mil anymore - Ski Huts (1) are located with Bundeswehr (and access controlled from Sennelager)! Alpine Training Centre Bavaria in Oberstdorf,
The Harz (German: ) is a highland area in northern Germany. It has the highest elevations for that region, and its rugged terrain extends across parts of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia. (You can now ski legally in the East Zone! or take a run ashore to Wernigerode)

I did a Snow Queen course at Silberhutte January 5-17 1976 and got my AMTCS Certificate for Unit Ski Instructors Course and a NSFGB Cross Country Bronze Certficate, there was a Navy Submariner on the course with us, who also passed. Not everyone did, I cannot remember any names. There was no group photo either unfortunately. We skied on the mountain right by the IGB, where the barb wire, the guards and the mines on the others side kept the East German population in prison. I was posted to Sonthofen near Oberstdorf in Bavaria to teach skiing for the next five weeks. That year I did 9 weeks of skiing as I went to a town near Innsbruck for two weeks on leave at Christmas, stayed with an Austrian family learned a lot of German in those two weeks before heading to Silberhutte. The following year I took my new wife to the same mountain for the New Years weekend a skiing second honeymoon(we just got married on the 22nd December. Right after that I went on the Army Ski Championships in Ischgl in Austria for two weeks. BTW we are still together after 47 years. Andrew Pludek Sig from 2 Sqdn 4 Div HQ and Sig Regt at Herford. My wife was the YWCA Bookshop Manager on the base in Herford.
