There are two trains of thought on this Regiment.

One says that it was stationed for most of its life in Bindon Barracks, Hameln before moving to Gordon Barracks. The other says it was in Gordon Barracks.

Anyone out there who can clear this one up please?

Paul.

I'd safely say that 28 Amph were stationed in Bindon! I did an AA Camo & Surv Cse back in the early eighties in Gordon Bks and it was occupied by 35 Eng Regt, HTH.

Hi Paul

Soprano54 is correct 35 Engr Regt supporting 20 Armd Bde was reformed in Nov 70 in Gordon Barracks and moved to Barker Barracks Paderborn Dec 99 where they remain today from Dec 77 to Jan 81 were known as 4 Armd Div Engr Regt

I was attached to the Combat Engineer Training Centre in 1979 from 3 Armd Div Engr Regt Iserlohn therefore on 4 Armd Div Engr Regt strength for admin purposes

28 Amph Engr Regt supporting 1 (BR) Corps formed Jan 71 in Bindon Barracks they dropped Amph in 1992 and supported 1 Armd Div then in Dec 99/Jan 00 moved into Gordon Barracks and remain there today

Cheers

That is fantastic, Arnd. As some of us have written on this site, there is a concern that the stories, history, usw of BAOR in Germany will gradually be forgotten or slip into irrelevance as the generations of those of us who served, or whose families served, in Germany age and pass away and a new generation grows up with no connection to this history.

I know the history of the Canadians in NRW is becoming forgotten and there just isn't much in the way of memorials or monuments or any sort of recorded history in Hemer, Iserlohn, Deilinghofen (there is a 'denkmal' to commemorate the hockey players there, put up by the Iserlohner Roosters and a small plaque on the Deilinghofen church), Werl, Unna, or Soest.

On line, all I have ever been able to find are sites created by the children, now adults of course, of Canadian military once stationed in Germany but have found nothing that is what I would call a "history" as such.

So knowing there is someone out there who is interested in keeping alive that history is wonderful.

Danke Shoen!!

Thanks for the nice words!

I have only good memories of the days of the cold war and the British soldiers from Hamelin!

Each week they were with their ferries close to my home and have practiced or "blown up" our bridge between Hagenohsen and Kirchohsen!

I ask again everyone, which has images of troops in Hamelin, between 1945 and today please help to complete my side with photos or what else!

Thanks a lot!

Paul

Just joined,

I was posted to 23 Amph Engr Sqn back in 1974 (then 28 Amph Engr Regt).

We were stationed in Bindon Bks, with 64 and 73 Amph Engr Sqns.

Soon after 73 went to NI as inf, they left and 65CSS took their place.

73's rigs were divided between 23 & 64, with some going away for war stock I believe.

Great days

28 Engineer Regiment is disbanding this year and I am writing the Regimental History. If you have any stories or photos relating to the Regiment, please PM or email me. Any help or information about the Regiment would be really helpful.

Thanks.

JK

Welcome to this site and good luck with your project

Webmaster Steve (an individual with Sapper connections) and I, with the assistance of other members of this site are currently researching and recording the early years of BAOR from May 1945 onwards.

We, and Steve in particular, might have some basic background information on the Hameln area which might be of interest.

Conversely we would appreciate sight of any information you may unearth on the 1945-1950 period.

Hi All

It is true that 28 was at Scharnhorst kaserne, bindon barracks and then moved to Gordon when 35 left for Paderborn. I was part of the rear party at 28 during the strip out and hand over back to the stadt.
I've just returned from Hameln, I visited for the farewell celebrations before Gordon barracks is finally handed back as well. I took a few photos of what was bindon, I will post them shortly. much of the barracks was pulled down 23's block included. RHQ, RAO, officers mess, wo's mess and the screws mess are left and I think 65's block as well.
Not sure what happened to the plaque at the back of the barracks would be interested to hear.
For all you ex 28 folks the green lantern/bath tub still goes, prob deserves some kind of corps recognition.

Hi all,
That is bridging made easy; not the hours of hard work we did over the Weser in early 1950's; then keep an eye on it while a large number of tanks roller over during the night
The best bit was picking mushrooms for breakfast in the morning

There is a very good website http://british-army-in-hameln.com hosted by a German military history enthusiast with contributions from former Sappers who have settled in the area which contains a great detail of accurate information about both the Barracks and 28 Engineer Regiment.
