My dead father joint to the Army in 1944 as a normal Wehrmachtssoldier with 16 years - he learnd his job very well - he does his duty at the pioneer school in Berlin-Karlshorst and in Berlin-Spandau at the General Litzmann Kaserne - his home was the 3. Pionier Ersatz Battalion 23 - after this he fight in the Prager Aufstand in Mai 45 and become POW in Furth in Walde - near the border CSR.
Who knows please the place in Berlin Spandau- the Street or any other information. Thank you all for the help!

| Thank you Rocky, it was not in Hamburg - in the POW papers was given this Name and later in the 60th my father wrote and ask for wearing his galantry- medals - Cornelie Münster - this is near by Aachen a early Office of the WAST - Office for former Soldiers of the Wehrmacht - today in Berlin - and he always give this name General Litzmann Baracks - the next Person to me - my Mother should sea this area 1949 /50 but she does not remember this place today.
But when you will know about something about persons in the former Wehrmacht you write to the WAST in Berlin - for a little fee you get good answer. 30 years behind death of my father and 60 years after War they gave me his DogTag number !
Thank you Rocky, Mery X-Mas and a good New Year to you...and your Family - thank´s for helping me - I must look ....
One or two Cinema Actors was also in this Area - One is know in the "Taxi to Tobruk" and the other one " I think to a Girl with name Piroschka " - always the same year of birth ..1928.

| It can be - that this Barrack was in the East Part of Berlin- but in West direction .This year I was in the Direction to Nauen - and I saw a great Area of former Barracks - but when 50 years Russian live there - it seen like to days after War - the people named this little Mongolia.
Or this Barracks can be in the near the Tegeler See Area. You know Spandau has a lot of under parts. I inform you when I found something.
This year I asked a Grandson of General Litzmann - his father was also a Ritter Cross member - and he told me - this is shure with the Barracks - but he don´t know the place. He wrote a book about his father Lewess-Litzmann. He was a diving Bomber Commander and build the East Airforce and zivilian Air in the DDR.
It can not be - that nobody know something about this - but I know 20 persons who also looking for this Barracks in Berlin - the fathers or grandfathers where also pioneers in this battalion but once - the time depending from 1937 to 45.
Two Month ago I get an old Soldier Identificationbook with a lot of papers, and in this papers was still standing the Battalion in Spandau, but not the Area - sometimes in think that was a ghost barrack !
Don`t worry about speaking or writing in German - it is always OK when person can speak together - !! I learned my English in the school and in a british pup near the british Airport Barracks here in Düsseldorf after school . | |

| Hi again,
The only barracks that I know of in the Spandau area of Berlin, when I served there in the mid 80's, were (under their English names) called Brooke Barracks and Wavell Barracks. Both were located together. Spandau Prison, whch was demolished on the death of Herr Hess was opposite Brooke Barracks. Farther down the road was Smuts Barracks, but Smuts barracks was modern and may have been built on top of a demolished Wermacht barracks. There was another British camp farther up the north, but I cannot remember the name. The barracks in the former east Berlin were occupied by the Russians and I am afraid that the only name I remember from there was Treptow.
Best wishes.

| Starcatcher thank you for your information on WASt. It will be of great assistance to my wife in finding out information on her uncle who served in the Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front and is MIA. We have some information from the Red Cross but hope to get more from WASt. | |
