| If you're referring to the Pathe video, the applauding soldiers appear to be RE personel, but what is the round patch on their sleeve below the div patch? | |

| Having looked at the clip I don't recognise the cinema. That said the name over the entrance say's Napier Cinema which could make it Napier Barracks Dortmund. I had a look on the Napier Barracks blogg spot and there were RE there in 1949,23 Field Engineer Regiment ( 2, 5 & 38 fld sqn and 21 fld park sqn) . The cinema in Hobart Barracks had steps on the right hand side leading up to the blocks and the square. Watched many a midnight movie there | |

| I thought all AKC cinemas bore the 'Globe Cinema" name. Was the Napier Cinema a one-off in honour of Lady Napier? | |

| The building shown in the link supplied by ron9516 and the one identified as Napier Cinema in the Pathe clip is definitely the same builidng, although it clearly has, 60 years on, fallen on bad times and is now quite derelict...such a shame!
I am not familiar with who Lady Napier was so I googled her (as rude as that sounds!) and see she was affiliated with the house of Scone. She was certainly a patrician looking lady. The Napiers, according to Wikipedia, are an old aristocratic Scottish family connected with Charles II.
Whether that Scots connection was carried over to Napier Barracks, I don't know....

| My father served as the adjutant of 20 Armd Brigade Gp in Hobart Barracks (Capt. Jack Hayward 5th RTR), Detmold between 1963-64, then again 66-70. I attended Hobart school in 63-64, and when they made the Pathe film featuring the tank regiment and Detmold (not his). I appear in the film as a schoolkid for 3 or 4 seconds. We lived in both Stresemann Str. and Wellenkamp Str (Hack). I used the outdoor pool every summer. It wasn't filtered therefore grew an unsightly green scum after 2 weeks. It was cleaned every 3 or so. I went to the Globe cinema most nights. On returning in 66 at the age of 14 it was a new world. They organised a youth club on Fridays in the attic of the building which situated on the right side of Hobart opposite the guardroom. It was brilliant for us at that age. Sgt Pepper came out a few weeks after I had arrived. We travelled for an hour to Gutersloh to attend King's School. There were 4 buses, our escort was a Mrs Brucke, she had a small Poodle tucked down the front of her coat! We went to the Sally bash most Saturdays for a fry-up. Army groups of the era were The Shades Of Blue (release a single 'Coplington') and The Putney Tricycle Works Band who were great too. We got a lot of grief from REME soldiers who disliked our long hair (fair enough) but also sometimes lay in an ambush after the cinema to beat us up which was out of order. I remember the 'halfway house' just down from Hobart, but of course, never went there. The Ice Cafe on Saturday afternoons. The gliding on the airfield, the bowling alley ... in fact, everything about Detmold from a 15-year-old's perspective. The German-built houses were amazing. Our house 27 Wellenkamp was beautiful and still looks great now. We had a red telephone. My father said if it ever rang it meant the Russians were hours away. We never realised that we were actually the peacetime frontline! My dad served at Dunkirk and then throughout Normandy in some serious battles. We lived in Bovington, Fallingbostell, Tidworth and Detmold of course. My mother is German and her parents lived a short distance from Detmold in Bad Driburg. The whole area and living experience were very memorable to me. I think I remember more than most serving soldiers haha. If anyone was in Detmold in this period I would love to hear from them.

Welcome
There are a number of contributor's to this site who call by from time to time who are very familiar with the Detmold area. You could well get a response. Me? I spent many happy years in the rival Garrison, Minden though I did have cause to visit Detmold from time to time.
Incidentally are you aware your old school at Gutersloh still exists, just?

| Hello Let Gen, Thanks for your reply. Out of all the places, I never visited Minden. I'm aware the school still functions. The Facebook page is advising on a final reunion early Summer. It's quite amazing that so few people of my era are going. There were a 1000 kids at the school between 66-70. Back to the site, I would love to hear from any old soldiers who were serving at the time (they would have to have been quite young though!). I'm glad your site exists. | |

| A Selfie ! Photo recce run 1/PRU/B0026 flown by RAF Wyton, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAF_Wyton - (by Ac XH 165 ?) (100 Sqn ??) There are at least 746 readable photos from the sortie on the NCAP Site. (Can be accessed by clicking on 1/PRU/B0026 in the header when the link above is opened). Need to align your mind with the Sennelager Range Map to work out what is on each plate flown west to east - Sortie probably flown to update the range-map overlay! Coords are in Lat Long format. If each plate is imported into a photo editing programme extensive detail can be viewed from the photograph! (Here is one to try - 541 Sqn RAF Cuxhaven Harbour 12 May 1945 - NCAP-000-000-361-945.jpg)
