But according to Uwe Timm, a native of Hamburg, currywurst was invented there by Lena Brueker at the end of WWII. I doubt this controversy will ever be resolved"
I's siding with Hamburg as it is my birthplace. I know a lady from Berlin who ended up in Soest after the war and says that the Belgians brought Curry Wurst to Germany.

Not sure about the Currywurst but I'll take your word for it. Belgium is where Pommes came from though. Mike

| They've changed the label on Iserlohner Pilsner in the last 30-odd years!!! Blasphemy....and on top of that the iconic Danzturm is gone off the label too!! Is nothing sacred??? LOL
I, of course, drank Iserlohner Pilsner when living in the Hemer area as it was 'the' beer to drink.
Up in Soest it varied; usually Warsteiner, or Isenbeck's (but only drank that at a pub we called Isenbeck's (but that was our name for it. It was on Hiddingser Weg, across from the Belgian Kaserne. It is now a veterninarian's office) and sometimes Veltins or Dortmunder Union in some pubs. It really depended on which gasthof we went to as each had their individual contract with a specific brewery so the only beer available at Gasthof "A" would be the beer from the brewery they contracted with. Not that we were all that picky....!

| I still have mayo on chips, whatever i can get is fine, i dont like ketchup anyway. got my kids into and they loved it too, caused a bit of a stur with their Kiwi mates here in NZ. Went for a trip to germany not too many years ago and we all went to the imbiss and had a brattie and chips, the kids thought it was the best 'fast food' they had ever tasted. there is a specialist caravan food outlet sets up in Christchurch (NZ of recent earthquake fame) sells bratties and they are very good, and very popular. i have never been able to find Tommys Zenf in NZ, now that was nice !! | |

That's what I always thought until I returned to Canada and started buying it in the local supermarkets. It is the same "extra stark" Lowensenf in the same familiar jar, but has about as much heat as an ice cube. It must be a different recipe for export. Sure not the three alarm stuff we got with our bockwurst in the local. Personally I still mix up the good old Coleman's (or Keen's as we seem to get here nowadays.)

Yes, just mix in in with water (some people use vinegar) until you have a nice creamy paste. Actually I'm going to try Lowensenf one more time to see if they've changed it for the better. I've also tried a couple of other German brands without much success. It all seems to resemble Grey Poupon Dijon mustard in taste and hotness. On another subject: do they still sell chips in those paper cones with a big gob of mayonnaise on top? A lot of people here look at me sideways when I explain this delicacy, but it's a surprisingly good combination. And yet another subject: how about those little round bami or nasi balls we used to extract from those Automatiek vending machines on Dutch streets? Also the chicken croquettes. After a hearty night of Amstel or Heineken they went down like a Christmas dinner. I've tried to find the recipe for them off and on for years to no avail. Do they still have those in the machines? Happy Times! Rod (Recce 83)

Happy Times! Rod (Recce 83) We have an Aldi here and you'd think they'd sell senf, they sell brat / bockwurst after all, but the only time I've seen it was when it was on a special promotion. Those vending machines in Holland. We were astonished, in '59 to see a vending machine offering pommes in Nijmegen. No salt & vinegar though !
